Delta Chat is like Telegram or Whatsapp but without the tracking or central control.

Supports GMail, Outlook and more!

@Alumina @null0x0 that's centralised in the way the fediverse is: meaning not very.

Every Mastodon instance is a point of centralisation but you can use any of them or stand up your own, it's much the same way with email. If you don't care for one server's policies or prices or whatever you're free to move anywhere you want.

That's something you don't get from other services.

@kungtotte @null0x0 Make sense.

Now here's the real question. Wouldnt most free mail services end up banning accounts for spammage?

If your'e sending a lot of message it could be considered spam which could limit your account..

@Alumina @kungtotte nope! Encrypted emails, and Most email servers care about spam reports not actual mails, so If you are using it normally then nope!

@null0x0 am I missing something? This sounds like "email with extra steps"

@flab It's a texting styled frontend for emails.

So yeah, just email with an extra step.

@null0x0 I personally feel like sending a plain old email is just as intuitive but maybe either my age is showing or I'm just an email stan.

@flab but this has encryption and WhatsApp like interface!

@null0x0 but email has encryption and a command-line interface!

@flab No the text content is only visible to the other party in this. Say if you use Gmail messages are stored on their servers in a machine readable form hence search works on Web UI. But i. This if you send Delta to Delta message then it is encrypted end to end.

@null0x0 well, E2E exists for email too, PGP has been the gold standard for this for... over 20 years now.

I'm sure that Delta makes key exchange easier (given that exchanging PGP keys is typically a manual process and a little obtuse) but still.

@flab it makes it a one click process. Noob friendly! 🙂

@flab I uses PGP and Have mailvelope/Kleopatra/Enigmail for thunderbird but this is way easier and faster.

@flab @null0x0 the good thing is that #DeltaChat doesn't force you to use Delta Chat, so you can be happy in your terminal using something like #mutt chatting with encrypted emails, with your friends that don't love classic #email as much as us ;) or simply don't even know what #PGP is

When using this, E-mail service providers do get all the info though, isn't it? For example if the other person and I both using gmail accounts to sign up and chat , google gets all the metadata, considering that this app end to end encrypts the chat. But if the other person is not using the app and using their email, then there's no way for the app to apply E2E and google(or email service provider) can read messeges too along with metadata.

@redstarfish yeah! So it's E2E for App only. But for normal messages it doesn't encrypt e2e rather sends it the old fashion way.

@null0x0 >you can use a knife as screw driver provided you use a quality knife
ok, but I prefer an actual screw driver

Yeah! But this seems to be a better way to email than conventional methods! It has autocrypt, seamless login and setup experience and stability.

@nik @null0x0 yeah, it's a much better alternative (compared to SMTP) even though it involves XML.

@nik @null0x0 @r the upside of this over XMPP is that your brother/wife/grandma don't have to sign up for another chat service (unless they want to), they'll see them as just plain emails.

You also already have everyone's contact info since it uses existing email addresses, with XMPP you have to know that it's,, etc.

That's the real killer feature of this thing.

XMPP is better than this! I would say this is suitable for absolute noobs!

This is so cool! This might actually be usable for non-technical people as well!

@null0x0 This looks very interesting, actually. I'll check it out soon. Thanks for posting that. :)

@null0x0 oh snap that sounds cool- use emails... I’m guessing they encrypt the messages? Very cool

@null0x0 all e-mail passin trough gmail addresses are tracked so...

Tracked yes! But they can't see the encrypted data. And using GMail is just an option not a recommendation. A lot of people use it so I thought of mentioning the support.

@null0x0 @delta Wonderful, I like that.

Hadn't heard about it yet but it's nice to have independent alternatives. 👍

@null0x0 @delta Wonderful!

And while I was having breaksfast, I remembered where I had heard the name.

A few Cuban young people were hanging out and chatting away, I joined them to practice Spanish and was fun. Then it became clear they were still living in Cuba - and that surprised me, that they could be connected into the Mastodon instances, while still physically there. Internet in Cuba was slow, hard to find and expensive last time I was there.

They explained that they used their government issued email accounts and something called #deltachat . Aha!

This has opened a channel they wouldn't have otherwise; our chat was fast paced, and knowing it worked bridging these and across national barriers to other traffic is great.

@esperera_98 is at our instance, some others were from different ones.

I don't think they know their people are using it and getting access to the Net under the radar.

Which is even more amazing!

@delta @esperera_98

there are similar non-open-source alternatives here, since mail is the only way some of us have to access internet, this is changing though #cuba
anyway, #DeltaChat is a great option and its best asset is the big (and growing) community of developers and enthusiasts
@design_RG @delta @esperera_98

I haven't visited Cuba in many years, am very fond of the country. I am happy that this bridge is opening for you.

The Revolution needs to update itself, the struggle is very real and widespread nowadays.

Future belongs to the younger, as we all have a limited time on this planet. Cheering for you all, hermanos y hermanas.
