2021 Darwin award contender, if that's still a thing.

I wonder if there should be a self-imposed rule for electric car manufacturers to make the car stop if there isn't a minimum weight detected on the driver seat. They already have a sensor on the front passenger seat to disable the airbag if a child is seated.

Teslas actually have a sensor on the driver seat as well. If you are waiting for it to charge and switch to the passenger seat to have enough space for a laptop the car switches off after a couple of minutes and boots back up if you push down on the driver seat...

Then how did that "accident" happen? The article mentions there was nobody in the driver's seat... Maybe 2 minutes is too long a time?

I think it only registers if someone sits there to verify wether it should start or not and if the safty belt is on while driving, if someone sits there.
It also only check if the key is present for starting not for driving.
In general the Software lacks a bit behind imho...
