Today I got running on my @PINE64 .

(Lots of help from mozzwald on Discord, using megi's 5.6 kernel.)

@njha @PINE64 How are pinephones? In terms of usability, how do they compare to a mainstream brand?

@orangelamp @PINE64 The hardware is a lot better than I thought it'd be. It's a little bit thicker than a normal Android phone, and it's very underpowered, but it beat my expectations (especially for the price).

The software isn't there yet. Keep in mind the actual PinePhone hasn't been released (only the BraveHeart edition for people to build the software), but even the most polished OS for it right now (postmarketOS) doesn't have phone calls working out of the box.

@njha @PINE64 Just seeing this is pretty wild. Kudos! 👍🏻😎

@njha @PINE64 I don't see a point when it uses up almost all of the ram.

@njha @PINE64 Is this version usable for making calls and such, or is this just the generic ARM version of #Fedora? I would love a regular #Debian phone with Gnome/Phosh.

@gerowen The one I have right now is just ARM Fedora, but once `ofono` is packaged for Fedora (someone is working on it IIRC) it should make calls too.

Someone actually has a stock Phosh + Debian image if you want that:

It can't call yet either, but ofono is already packaged so it shouldn't be *too* hard to get it to work.

@njha @gerowen

That was also the question I had. IMHO, having a phone not being able to make a classic call (w/o a data network), is not possible for the vast majority of the world's population.

Please update this post if you are able to make it work !

@njha @PINE64 Where does one get Megi's 5.6 kernel? It seems the build scripts for UBports let me specify which kernel to use and where to get it, so I'm eager to try it with that. Glad it works with Fedora.
@njha This is amazing:

This is what is needed in order to get a fully-working PinePhone that everyone can use. Once this work is complete, the OS and userspace support for it will follow much more easily. And it looks like it's pretty near complete!

@bamfic You can boot most (if not all) normal distros already, provided they have arm64 packages. People have Arch and Gentoo running already :P

@njha @PINE64 The future, in my opinion, isn't really phone specific apps and distros, but just the same stuff we know and love from the desktop. So this is great!

@njha @PINE64
