Lifesaving tip of the day; open full permissions for USB storage devices so you don't need to sudo to write images to microSD cards when playing with your Pi, for instance. This way you do not have to worry about wiping your internal drives. Before I did this myself I always double and triple checked before doing any writing to (micro)SD cards.
On my Ubuntu desktop i've put the following line in /etc/udev/rules.d/99-usb-storage.rules:
KERNEL=="sd*", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", MODE="0666"
