Micah Ellison
I'm overdue for an #introduction toot since I've been on Fosstodon for a few months. Hello!

I've been a maintainer of the Python CLI app jrnl for 4 or 5 years now, and I've been coding professionally for 15+ years in a wide variety of tech.

I like to browse the Fosstodon feed for news, but when I see a question I might be able to answer, I usually respond. I hope my answers are helpful! I don't plan to post much otherwise, but when I do, I'll likely be writing about open source and Python.

Micah Ellison
Thinking about how "nape" means "back of the neck" but people always write "nape of the neck" instead of just "nape"

Micah Ellison
I like the new Mastodon dialogue that appears when I reply to someone that isn't a mutual. It's basically a short reminder to be respectful, relevant, kind, and open.

These are my values when I reply to people anyway, but the thing about values is that it requires conscious effort to live by them, especially when there isn't social pressure to reinforce them. This little nudge makes it easier to act the way I want to act while in the heat of the moment.

Micah Ellison
Are there any #HomeBrew users on a #Mac that want to help out by trying to reproduce this issue? Or, even better, help solve it? It just takes a couple commands to repro. https://github.com/jrnl-org/jrnl/issues/1827

Micah Ellison
Deprecation warnings are like junk in the broom closet. I'd rather just leave them there and do anything else other than clean them up, but once I finally do, it feels GREAT

Micah Ellison
We just got our first chatbot-generated comment on our GitHub issues and it's completely wrong but also very detailed and plausible.

I hope this doesn't become a regular problem for us, but at least I know what I can do: hide the comment swiftly, ask the offending user to stop posting chatbot-generated answers, and spread the word in my various communities that this behavior is unwelcome.

Micah Ellison
This #OpenSource #Android drum machine app "Drum On" rocks. I'm sure it's fun to play with it if you don't know anything about music, but it also has some surprisingly advanced features (try long-pressing buttons for whole new menus!). https://f-droid.org/en/packages/se.tube42.drum.android/

Micah Ellison
One of my favorite things about open source is when I see someone tracking down a strange issue across the boundaries of several disparate systems.

This last week, a contributor did exactly this by wading through jrnl, Python, WSL, Ubuntu, HomeBrew, glibc, and some quirks in time zone data. They reported their findings in all the right places, and now this problem is fixed at the root without a single commit to our repo. https://github.com/jrnl-org/jrnl/issues/1607#issuecomment-1662524297

Micah Ellison
It's been really nice regularly browsing the Fosstodon local feed. I learn something every day, and it's usually relevant to the stuff I work on, too.
