Pinned toot

Fosstodon is a nice instance, but I find myself wanting to talk about stuff that isn't necessary a good fit here, so I've signed up with masto.host to create my own instance at asgartech.com.

Gonna need a handle for my main account there. Care to suggest one?

@rudolf @mike @ataraxia937 I know. Fortunately, my parents know better than to get psychosomatic hemorrhoids over me using Linux. Especially since it lets them use a laptop from 2010 instead of shelling out for a new machine. :)

Once you have, you know what to do next.

@mgraybosch The fact that I cannot *instantly* maximise a window vertically (what I do most often, esp. terminal windows), and instead have to muck with a mouse and find a handle or corner and drag it and then reposition the window ....

Drives me absolutely nuts on pretty much any other desktop. It's insane that's not a built-in.

(Many 'Nix WMs can support that, but e.g., MacOS *doesn't*, which ... gah. Mac window management is utteryly fucked. And yet, based on NeXTstep. SMH.)

Forgot I had a @keybase account.

I don't have one any longer. LOL

@mgraybosch No.

What they are really isn't the point. It's *that* they are, that I've mapped them to stuff I find useful, and that they've been virtually unchanged for 20+ years.

WindowMaker is literally the GUI I've used longer than and more than any other.

Vertical and FS window maximisation.
Hotkeys for virtual desktops.
Launch terminal, mutt, vi, w3m.
Alt-F2 program launcher.
A lock-screen hotkey.

Others, though those are the main set.

Anyone who claims it's impossible to be both bored and frightened at the same time (indeed, to spend most of one's life in such a combination of states) has never worked in IT.

Window Maker on Slackware. Nothing special. Pathetic uptime because of a power outage that outlasted my UPS.

To use another bit of popular culture, I like to think of Captain Mals speech from Serenity after he discovers what the Alliance did to Miranda. As he say's sooner or later they will come back to the idea again. Our fight about Mass Surveillance and data collection is like that. It will never stop. We can never rest on our laurels. Nor should we.

The is the point where further attempts to salvage a bad situation are more trouble than they're worth.

Once a situation goes Ripley, the only viable option is to take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

I can use ed, vi, and Emacs -- and will switch between them as needed. I do all of my writing with FOSS tools, and my stories' setting has a strong FOSS culture.
