How to be more positive while not changing your position:
"I don't like big corporations controlling my life" turns into "I like supporting and contributing to the work of independent creators"
@metalune This kind of thinking may be beneficial to help others see one's position in a more positive light, which may be more appealing for others to join one in their position.
@nebunez that's the intention, I don't want to come across like a total mad extremist when I talk to new people ;)
While I appreciate this, we might consider variations like "I like consensual sex" or "I like to be judged by the content of my character rather than the color of my skin".
@kylebronsdon that's totally not related to what I wanted to say? those are just valid complaints, my point was to demonstrate how to get across the same point while not coming across like a total maniac
I get and appreciate your point. Mine was that while it's important to make allies, *maybe* softening the very real, life-threatening abuse to do it isn't the answer. You probably have a lot more friends than I do :)
@kylebronsdon I doubt that I have more friends than you do, but I'm working on it. The thing is, it's about not scaring people away just because you have strong thoughts on a specific topic as "unsignificant" as companies and shit. The topics you were pointing out are serious issues that you shouldn't base your entire character on, but you should know how to convey them. because people are more than just their opinion on a specific topic.
At the risk of sounding like a maniac, my impression is that we're in a real, not metaphorical global class war in which people are being ruined in massive numbers for the benefit of a few. The Opinion Argument has been used by the right for decades because so many of their ideas are not only illogical and unethical but also really unpopular. Karl Popper's tolerance paradox is relevant here. In any case, your thoughtfulness and optimism are super valuable right now. I'm running low :)
@kylebronsdon just don't worry about it, sometimes we all need to take a step back, at the end of the deay we're not humans in a society, we're humans living on a planet. That mindset has kept me sane for years, we're all just humans on earth.
