I don't know how it never occurred to me, but I can just use the /tmp folder for appropriate downloads rather than clog up my ~/Downloads folder which I then have to tidy up at some point.
@marvka oh wow, I never knew this. I guess I never bothered to try. I have a ~/tmp folder because I figured that /tmp was off-limits.
Don't even need elevated privileges to access it.
