I've finally internalized the fact that it doesn't matter what DE/WM/editor/tool you use. Every piece of #software comes with its trade-offs and peoples tastes & needs will naturally differ.
Often I find myself swayed by popular new software and feel the urge to make major changes to my work-flow for eventual small 'productivity gains' that I end up reversing.
There's a certain sense of tranquillity in accepting & respecting each others preferences without fighting about which tool is better.
Hey everyone,
Just joined #mastodon after being quite curious about it. Haven't used any social media since a good 5+ years.
I'm a Linux user/hobbyist since around 2016 and switched the vast majority of my applications on desktop and Android to FOSS ones. Apart from my video card driver, because Nvidia I also just degoogled my phone last month and switched to LineageOS with MicroG. Very happy with it so far!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to join interesting discussions. #introductions
I've been having so much fun this past week spinning up services on my VPS. #Yunohost is a great service and makes it super easy to spin up whatever you want. Now I'm running out of ram on my free tier Azure VPS though 😁 So far have rss, xmpp, searx and an irc client running.
Pest control
I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like to live in hot humid countries where pests are so common and plentiful that you almost have no choice but to live with them. Although I suppose its partly a matter of culture and what you're used to. There's cultures eating fried and roasted insects as street food after all.
Pest control
Very much considering just dumping a bunch of money into insecticide smoke bombs and fumigating the flat until everything is dead. Also very tempted to only use artificial fibres from now on.
Pest control
It's crazy how difficult it can be to get rid of pests in the house. We've been dealing with a carpet beetle infestation for the past couple of months now and ended up having to throw away half our fabrics. The little gluttons eat just about anything natural. Bedding, t shirts, hats, scarves, no fabric is safe. At first we thought they only eat animal based fabrics, but nope. Cotton is on the menu as well. And artificial fibres like fluffy polyester is apparently also comfy bedding.
My biggest issue with learning development skills is really sticking to a language for any real period of time, I jump around like crazy, which means I have a very low level knowledge in many languages rather than the preferred high level knowledge in a few. #programming #development
It's funny to see so many people complain about how Signal is developed or maintained meanwhile they're accomplishing what nobody else ever has: making end-to-end encryption accessible to non-experts for real. They have invented and continue to invent novel techniques overcoming complex technical challenges to do so, all while not complicating the UX. So before you criticize, consider that your criticism might be irrelevant to anyone outside the narrow scope of computing enthusiasts.
Looking for inspirations as to what lightweight services to #selfhost on a very low powdered VPS with 1 vcpu and 1Gb ram. Running miniflux so far but still have about 700-800mb ram free. Only running miniflux seems like a waste of resources on it still.
Don't worry, be happy, smile and meet the day with a smile
Let's not take ourself or the software we use too seriously, a little bonus writing today, I promise I won't spam so often here, I just felt inspired for some reason.

Reminder that I wrote a book for struggling programmers called "The Mediocre Programmer". It's a book about helping folks along on their journey with programming, including advice on finding communities, ranking ourselves (spoiler: it's not helpful), backstage vs. performance, and even the emotions surrounding programming. It's a free eBook released under a Creative Commons license. I hope you'll check it out:
Spent half the day spinning up and configuring a VPS on the Microsoft Azure free tier that lasts a year. Pretty fun to mess around with, and I installed #miniflux on it as my #rss reader.
I already have a bunch of things running on my home server, but I don't like exposing it outside of my network, so a VPS is quite nice for that.
A tip for newcomers: if you want to follow someone but don't want to see their "retweets" (called "boosts" here), you can tap "hide boosts" from the three dot button on their profile.
