Marketing is not the same as advertising. Many people confuse marketing with spending money on advertising. It's got nothing to do with it. You can do great marketing and still spend zero on paid ads.

One great book I can recommend on the topic of effective marketing is "This Is Marketing" by the legendary Seth Godin.

@markosaric Yeah, but like anything, that's not an option for every situation, and not all advertising is the slimy online advertising you're probably alluding towards. Sometimes it's the slightly less slimy radio, TV, or print ads.

Marketing always costs something. If not straight cash on ads or branded items, then something else of value like your time to massage the free stuff.

@redeagle true. but these days most money is spent on online ads so anyone just doing radio/tv/print and not online is a tiny minority
