Today marks nine years since the last big OpenOffice update (4.1). If you're still using it, but want something more up-to-date, check out #LibreOffice! It was based on OpenOffice and is also free and open source, but with huge improvements and many fixes: https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/libreoffice/
@libreoffice is anyone still using Open Office?
@gpowerf @libreoffice The old Win XP laptop my uncle once gave me (after he'd used it) still runs it. Old memories.
I am using
OpenOffice.
Know why?
Because it just works for what I use it for. Why would I use a similar product when the product I use just works for me.
@TopKnot @gpowerf Use what works for you, but be aware that you might not be getting security fixes on time with OpenOffice: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_OpenOffice#Security
Yeah, I still use Open Office. With well over a decade of using it, it does what I need it to do, and/or I resigned from trying to get something more from it. My personal needs to write documents has been shrinking more and more with email or other non-standard composition platforms being good enough. But admittedly I’m getting older.
However I’m definitely going to try this out
@libreoffice I remember, many many years ago, buying a copy of Staroffice.
@ibeardslee Those were the days...
@libreoffice @ibeardslee In 2000, my parents bought a PC with StarOffice 5.1 preinstalled.
I discovered OpenOffice (1.x) in 2005 when I went to my cousin’s home once.
Office7 (a fork) was preinstalled on my first laptop PC (2007-2009).
I switched from Office 2007 to OOo in 2010, and from OOo to LibO the day of its public release (a winning bet, since nobody knew if this fork will last at this time).
@ibeardslee @libreoffice On Ubuntu the startup icon briefly shows as "soffice"
@ibeardslee
I was there as well.
@libreoffice
@libreoffice that people still work on OO. Im suprised that they got that many patches
@Sebastian Many of the "patches" are just removing whitespace though, like this: https://github.com/apache/openoffice/commit/4cef5a18466c469f4cb45fa7dd242aa97a22b662
@libreoffice solche Vergleiche zw LO und OOo sollten öfters aufgezeigt werden.
@libreoffice Openoffice revels in denial of its own end of life, it's so pathetic.
LibreOffice is substantially better than OpenOffice…
@libreoffice I don't understand why Apache doesn't end this project and redirect to Libre office.
@libreoffice Foss is great. Always used LibreOffice and always will. Thanks for the sweet apps
@libreoffice I'm using LibreOffice to write my stories and create eBook manuscripts! Highly recommend!
@libreoffice
Started with OO in 1997. Made the switch to LO 4 years ago. Keep up the good work.
@libreoffice I started using MS Piece of Crap, StarOffice then OpenOffice and since the ehem ehem LibreOffice. I remember the first time I thought «Aaah, things are where they supposed to be» and I wasn't feeling working against the writting editor :)
Thanks for all this work
@libreoffice yes I use libre office it’s great!
@libreoffice at it's time, I LOVED OpenOffice But it's development was unfortunate, so thank you LibreOffice so much for continuation
@libreoffice looks like a lot of benefits of using libre office instead of open office
