LibreOffice Design

We got a request to make the default cell width in LibreOffice Calc a bit narrower. What do you think?

Feel free to comment with your own proposal.

Screenshot with 2.26 vs. 1.9 cm using the Liberation Sans font in 10pt.

We calculate internally in points, and the current value is 64. It's not the question whether metric or imperial units but the default width of columns (you can always use a different template to more narrow or larger).

@libodesign
That screenshot explains it nicely. When using Liberation Sans in 10pt, and assuming that is the default font, you can fit 10 characters in a cell. That said, if cell width was made a little larger you would have a little bit of visual separation between cells when using that many characters.

@blendergeek Good choice too; we will take it into consideration if it gets boosted.

mm@blendergeek@mastodon.social
I agree. I opted for 19 mm, but 20 mm would make more sense.

OTOH I resize the column width almost every time. So no strong feelings about the default.

@libodesign

@blendergeek @libodesign I think they should be exactly 2.2321 cm. Anything less or more is unusable.

@libodesign I'd consider 2cm as a standard measurement.

If you need a rounded of measurement for that older measurement system consider the system's default measurement units when defining the cell width.

* 2cm for modern metric systems,
* 3/4 inch for older imperial systems.

@libodesign
If not already present, make it an option to set a default width yourself.
:-)

@libodesign go metric, like the majority on earth already is. Why keeping to an old system?

@libodesign Split the difference: make it 2.0cm so that at least there's an obvious reason for the specific length 😁

@libodesign Most of the time I need them to be wider than default size but I don't mind it. 1.9cm looks fine but I'd maybe prefer 2.0cm.

@libodesign
I always just double click on the edge so whatever fits, so it's kinda moot to me. (Also most of my spreadsheeting is at work, and they have us use MS Office. LibreOffice is on my home computer.)

@libodesign

Isn't there a setting somewhere for the default width?

Give /everyone/ what they want.

@bobharvey

Set your default width in your default template for new documents.

@libodesign

@libodesign As I can resize it easily myself, I don't think you need to spend time on this.
