You would think that implementing both iterator and const_iterator in C++ would be simple by making clever use of templates, but believe me, it's not. Either that, or I have yet to discover a simple and clever way of doing exactly that.

One drawback of LFS is that it requires separate storage often on a separate server with different transfer mechanism & authentication. On top of that it often requires checking in .lfsconfig and .gitattributes in the repo. Hopefully partial-clone is easier to set up & use.

As a (somewhat) heavy user of LFS, I need to learn more about this Git partial-clone feature.
