The beauty industry: Are you happy with your skin? Really? Have you thought about what it looks like to insects?
@kate So that's why that praying mantis won't stop staring.
Can't say I have.
Can't say I care!
@kate I always thought my skin simply looked tasty to insects. Especially of the bloodsucking variety.
@kate for the girl that's crushing on that mantis shrimp from biology class.
@kate Heaven forbid my traditional God fearing white honest working farmhand husband with vision like The Predator detect the presence of organic irregularities found within my carbon based flesh prison
@alfredohno @kate Carbon based flesh prison is great. I’ve been looking for the right words for ages.
@kate Or crustaceans!
@kate that's cool camouflage
@kate i'm more and more convinced that getting rid of the advertising industry is the single most effective lever against climate collapse, environmental destruction, growing mental health issues and extreme accumulation of wealth in the accounts of a few...
@kate
well have to admit that was not completely precise - I'm not getting any more convinced because I reached 1000% already a while ago.
@kate If we continue at the current rate, there won’t be any insects left soon. So, euh....
@kate After all, many insects are great providers, and really, have you looked at the state of men these days?
@kate Or in the back room of the Spencer Gifts at the mall.
@kate I don't even care about my visible dark spots. What's this "hidden dark spots" nonsense? Hilarious.
@spiegelmama @kate my “hidden dark spot” is my soul
@spiegelmama Same. This is me, don't look if you don't like what you see.
@kate This is the content I come to Mastodon for. Thank you very much for this. Restoring my faith in humanity.
@kate This might be caused by zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or aromatic compounds in the cosmetics. A similar effect can be seen for sunscreen.
Like the whole body deodorant snake oil I'm sure even plenty of Mastodonians have fallen for.
@kate What kind of monster thinks the one on the left looks better than the one on the right?
Makes me think if my dog likes me because she thinks I'm beautiful.
But I guess they go more by smell than looks and she also eats shit of the ground so...
@kate
Honestly the lesson here SHOULD be 'we can even give a beautiful model a complex about how she looks, obviously we will do it to anyone'
@kate did you know that passerine birds and reef fish could be judging your complexion?
@kate
Next up: infrared
@kate@fosstodon.org The one in the right looks like sun damage but yeah fucking hate the beauty industry, it's making all worse than it was
@kate@fosstodon.org i think your human skin is soft and beautiful
@kate there should be law against this.
Its Plain abusive.
@kate wtf even is the point of this?
@kate I noticed I seem to have some couperosa redness on my cheeks and googled if there was something I could do about it… ”The most important thing is to cleanse, moisturise and care for your skin twice a day every day” …Ok ok I’ll stop reading here, not gonna do that, thank you very much ps. Fuck all that crap, it’s totally unnecessary and in the end more harmful than useful.
@kate Am I bovvered?
@kate I am all but convinced that advertising works by causing pain and promising remedy.
You cannot sell anything to confident, happy, and content people, doubly so for people in loving relationships.
All of it is made to make us miserable when we are really not.
I believe that we are fine, in general, but making us insecure, miserable, and anxious seems what advertisers need us to be.
What do I care what I look like to a bug, when my beloved can recognize me in a crowd, instantly?
Not only are you entirely correct, there's a term for it. FUD: Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.
Since the 70s this shit is a key FOUNDATION of marketing, which these days amounts to nothing less than psychological warfare.
They sell you the disease along with the cure. They hurt you and then promise they are the only ones who can save you. Just like cults.

@kate Oh my stars, what about ants?? I'd hate to think my favourite insect is repelled by my spotty skin?
@kate unless you’re cremated insect love is inevitable.
@kate
Fucking bugs and their unrealistic beauty standards...
I DON'T NEED COMPOUND EYES AND A CHITINOUS EXOSKELETON TO BE BEAUTIFUL, GODDAMNIT.
@kate oooh they gotta be kidding! It's literally invisible!
@kate are you conforming enough? conform harder!
That's so superficial and surface-level!
I recall from reading the Lensman series back in my youth, that the doctor character decided whether women were worthy depending on whether they had a beautiful skeleton or not.
@kate I guess Amy from Rick and Morty might care about this.
@kate Infrared photos look weird too…

UV being a shorter wavelength probably reveals a lot of imperfections that visible light and IR miss.
Girls with dusky skin colour looks very good and attractive to me. I am so fond of darked skin colour.
