Just donated to few of the open source projects that I love Vuejs,
Mastodon, WireGuard, Ory.sh and Mozilla Thunderbird. This year I used OpenCollective for most donations opencollective.com/karambir

The #Librem5 software team were hard at work last month making changes to calls, messaging, settings, the software store, libhandy, the shell and compositor, virtual keyboard, kernel and much more.

So I got a scammy spam email on my iPhone just now. I held my finger on the link in the message to see the URL and the phone—which had updated last night—proceeded to FETCH THE PAGE AND SHOW IT IN A POP-UP PREVIEW.

There was a menu item to turn that off and I did so immediately, but, uh, thanks guys.

"i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision.
"actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux."
i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux."

the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!"
coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long."

with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death.

That's a little bit more optimism than I have I'm afraid. As long as we're letting giant corporations with their own best interests in mind control the Internet, things are going to go from bad to worse.

@prashere Well, google has engulfed android so much its not open in many ways. Atleast for normal applicaton-level developers. The play-services especially around gcm/fcm and maps 😣

@freakazoid Me too. I give some concession to freshers(straight out of the college) as they don't really understand a lot cool things they use are there because few are fighting for them.

@kev I am more concerned about the open-source part getting stagnated. Like not getting killed, but no features. Just small amount of bugfixes. In that case, community will not have strong motive to fork but still suffer.

Looking at latest launch of skype web working only on chrome and edge and this comment news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1 I think we should start labeling these developers as "Chrome Developers" rather than Web Developers

@kev I too think about it. Have to use so many plugins just to have decent contacts syncing
