All programming languages have inherit ugliness because they're all attempts to map between the sacred and the profane. Some languages delight in their earthly nature; always ugly, but eminently practical creatures of the world they inhabit. Others attempt to transcend their chthonic nature & stay pure; often beautiful, but it makes the inevitable stains of reality stand out all the more

“To great uncertainty and controversy, in 2007, Ljubljana closed 12 hectares of its city center to private cars. Just 40% of residents approved.

A decade later, no less than 97% were against reopening to motor traffic: “None of us can really imagine cars ever staging a comeback”.” —Melissa & Chris Bruntlett, @modacitylife,, [1/3].

I wrote a little explanation of my latest tweak to my Keyboardio Model 01. My config had been stable for a while, but I recently had the need (""need"") for easy unicode input on the mac...

For the first time in the almost five years I've had my Keyboardio, I just for the first time tried having it send Focus commands over the serial port and writing a little companion host-side app to handle it. Oh my goodness, the new level of power that I've just realized is available to me... 🤩

Gmail will block all third party mail clients starting from June:

That is, unless they pay $4500 minimum for an audit :D

Stop using gmail and enabling their monopolistic practices, if you already haven't.

This post doesn't seem to be getting shared nearly as much as the #nvidia announcement, which is a shame because it explains all the big picture stuff everybody is wondering about.

This seems like a very interesting approach - a sort of Clojurescript meta-interpreter to allow for seamless back/front end code communication. I have many questions about how various aspects of it work…I wish source was available, but I suppose that will come later

Much of complexity in software is a result of people trying to solve a hypothetical problem they think they'll have. My experience is that it's always best to write the simplest code that adequately solves the problem you actually have.

software grousing

the software we use to make software is split between

a) artifacts of profound depth and multi-layered beauty, honed for purpose by generations of craftspeople - things that may require familiarization and study, but reward the effort with years of aid to thought and effort

b) high-test distillations of the worst tortures our discipline inflicts on the rest of the world, but turned back on a userbase just about capable of operating them by virtue of years of agonizing struggle

Where do you spend the most time in ?

I am in Local the most tbh

If you can boost it would be nice

Wow, the local timeline is really exploding; I did not expect such a sudden exodus…remains to be seen how many folks will stick around, but the death of Twitter has surely been coming for some time now; fingers crossed now is the time

Some people living with disabilities say they are applying for assisted dying because they would rather die than struggle to survive on ODSP

Once again, Chrystia Freeland uses the interesting ploy of trying to deflect by just yelling "Russian psy-op". Oh, the accusations are true -- her grandpa was a Nazi, she was wearing a fascist symbol -- but that's not the point, those dastardly Reds are employing "truth" to make her look bad!

This whole situation highlights how much anti-Russian racism there is in the West. People, including politicians and big name Western figures, are talking about expelling Russian students or putting Russian immigrants in concentration camps. Websites are blocking access by all Russian IP addresses and other companies are similarly denying service to Russians.
