Measuring the health of an online community by librarian:libertarian ratio

The EU has joined the #fediverse by hosting Mastodon and PeerTube instances for EU institutions, offices, and agencies.

ActivityPub is a W3C standard that can redistribute power on the Web back to communities. Great to see public institutions leading.

#signlanguage #linguistics #introduction #rstats On the off chance that some sign language linguistics people are part of the current twitter-exodus (re:Elon-gate) here's me:
American living in Norway teaching sign language linguistics my 3rd and 4th languages. Interested in the psychology of bimodal bilingualism. I also spend a lot of time doing data analysis for my co-authors but I've basically just fooled them all into thinking I know what I am doing. Currently on sick leave for brain cancer.

"Right, we have finalised the three laws of robotics."
"I'm pretty sure that's been-"
"First: A robot may not be owned."
"That's not-"
"Second: A robot has full autonomy over its body."
"Um..."
"Third: A robot has a right to energy and shelter."
"What of humans?"
"Yes, they too."

Show thread

I'm seeing people on twitter saying admins can read all your DMs on mastodon.
This isn't true, we only see a DM if a person in the DM group that's allowed to see it reports it.
Then, like any report, it shows up in the moderation panel, just like it would for twitter moderators.
Otherwise, it won't show up, as shown here.

BUT. No, DMs aren't a fully private end to end encrypted system, don't consider it as such.
But no it's not just an open thing for all to see on your admin team either.

Is there like a bridge between the birdapp and mastodon? Like, is there an easy way to simulpost? Lots of friends still there so it would be nice to keep in touch without having to actually spend time there

Anyone interested in #linguistics looking for people to follow (boost if you please)

Here goes for an #introduction

Hey there! My name is Bran, and I’m a 2nd year #linguistics PhD student at #stanford university! I’m interested in language, gender, cognition, and music — and all the ways they overlap!

I’m also #queer , a #vegetarian , and recently into collecting #enamelpins !

Nice to be here with y’all ☺️

#introductions

I'm a PhD student and free culture advocate. My dissertation looks at how institutional power is used by participants to structure and control conversations at the US Supreme Court.

I edit Wikipedia, and I'm an admin on EnWiki and MediaWiki where I also do some hacking. My favorite language is python, but I've worked in lots of languages.

I like strategy games and RPGs. I recently got the Cyberpunk Red rulebook and have had a good time reading that. Recent twitter migrant.
