Day 1 of playing with Valve's new Proton software.

It's awesome. Seriously, this is a game changer. The ability to play a game with no Linux version *and have it show as a Linux sale* to the developer, is great. This is what we needed, as it allows us to use Wine without the nagging feeling that we're undermining ourselves by reducing the apparent market share.

Now I need to learn how to rebuild Proton so I can include a 2line patch for Path of Exile.

@timapple Tested working so far:

* Path of Exile (DX9)
* Infested Planet
* Gemcraft Shadows
* Defense Grid
* Warframe
* Subnautica

@kungtotte you mentioned a spreadsheet?

@gwmngilfen

>this is a game changer

I see what you did there.

@gwmngilfen So the Devs still get information on the OS their game was purchased on?

Nice!

@PocketNerd indeed, it's in the FAQ - devs see the sale as the platform you played on for the most time in during the first 2 weeks after purchase. Since the *client* is Linux, that's what the platform reports as, even if you're using Proton to play.

There's a few things on my wishlist I should try...
* Homeworld Remastered Collection
* Grim Dawn
* Old XCom / UFO games
* Total Annihilation / SupCom

@gwmngilfen @PocketNerd Grim Dawn is the big one for me, but according to the spreadsheet that's floating around there's like six reports of people playing it flawlessly. Going to give it a go in the next hour and see how it goes.

@kungtotte @PocketNerd ooh let me know, I almost considered a purchase to test it myself...

@gwmngilfen what games did you try with it?

@gwmngilfen @kungtotte all succesful out of the box..or was there tweaking needed?

@timapple pretty much all out of the box. Path of Exile needs so.e work but I expected that (long time PoE player via Lutris)...

@gwmngilfen @timapple @kungtotte

well done with Path of Exile.. it froze my desktop.. some error about not being able to build a WIC factory, a bunch of font errors then completely froze my computer.. that was yesterday though so maybe some updates have happened since then.. had several steam updates today.. will try again.

@asovereignscot @timapple @kungtotte the WICFactory issue is DX11, you need to drop to DX9 for Proton to run it.

(This is the 2 line patch I mentioned, which allows Wine to run the DX11 version via DXVK. Once I know how to rebuild Proton, I will apply it ;p)

@asovereignscot @timapple @kungtotte

OK, this doesn't look too bad ....

github.com/ValveSoftware/Proto

I see where it checks out the Wine source, so I can probably patch it. Time to spin up a Debian virtual machine...

(If I get a working DX11 PoE build of Proton, I'll see if I can share it :P)
