Now that FF removed the PWA shit Hydrogen is no longer usable. It also doesn't seem to work in Angelfish or Chromium and Qutebrowser has a new dependency that plain doesn't exist anywhere in the internet. Nheko is total dogshit on mobile devices because it crashes every few seconds and with luck half of the buttons work and Mirage doesn't just load fdor ages it loads forever now. That makes the Matrix situation on the Pinephone about as bad as it can possibly be aka broken

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

It's not a specially good experience but I think Fractal with Pantalaimon and Seahorse is my only option :/

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey Mirage works for for me but its not great. I know the Nheko developers are trying to get it to work correctly on the pinephone.
What about Fractal?

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@jason123santa Fractal works somewhat okayish but if you want encryption you need Pantalaimon and that experience isn't great. Mirage worked not well but at least it did for a long time but on PostmarketOS it seems to get in a loading loop on first start for me. Well and while I am happy that the Nheko dev tries his best what he got so far is to put it mildly shit :/

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey I use mirage on Arch so that might be why it works for me.
Fractal works for everything except replies and encryption. There is only one main developer working on Nheko but its a great client on everything but mobile linux.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@jason123santa I used Mirage on Arch to for a while but my main setup is PostmarketOS now. About Nheko it's not specially eye candy on any device but tends to work well on desktop. If it wouldn't take basically the same amount of ram as the Electron Element option I would probably even use it. About Fractal I had encryption working before using Pantalaimon but that lags like shit :/ Also use Seahorse to unlock your keyring in case you wanna use Fractal.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey
I always thought that Nheko would preform better then Element desktop since its a native linux client and not electron. The matrix client I use on my main desktop is just element in the browser.
I know about the Seahorse way of unlocking the keyring to use Fractal.

How is PostmarketOS compared to Arch?

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@jason123santa I love Arch and it will stay my testing setup but PostmarketOS with it's very minimal overhead just has something going for it to. It feels a bit faster to me and I like the keyboard config a lot more well and it has actual packages for most things you usually only find in the AUR. I can't really tell you which one is better but I really like PmOS rn and don't plan to switch back any time soon. About Nheko it dose a tiny bit better then Element but not much.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey
I should try pmOS if its faster and has most packages in the main repos instead of on Arch the AUR.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@jason123santa I really like Arch, PostmarketOS and Mobian and have a hard time deciding between them but the many things PmOS has packaged and the fact that it only take like half the disk space got me to use it for now. Like all distros it has it's downsides and the AUR has a few more things then PmOS which is why I use it on my testing SD card. About the speed that's more of a feeling idk if it's actually true because I disabled animations with PostmarketOS Tweaks :D

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey PostmarketOS is more minimal then Arch will ever be. Its based on Alpine linux and is not a GNU distro. Its also not using systemd and that might make it faster.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@jason123santa You basically sumed up why I think it will turn out to be the best OS for a low powered device like the Pinephone in the long run :D

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey Did you try gomuks?

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@huy_ngo Terminal apps tend to not be great on a mobile screen. Phosh sucks at many things including horizontal typing aince it covers like 80% of the screen with the keyboard on :/

@gamey, gomuks UI design does not fit narrow screen very well, which isn't its fault since TUI apps can usually expect 80x24. Though, something like ircll (or most IRC clients) would work well. cmus is go-to music player now though I use a graphical one on my laptop (Audacious).

Cc: @huy_ngo

@mcsinyx @huy_ngo Yea ik but if Phosh did suck at it (wouldn't take up most of the screen) it should work more or less horizontally.

@stereo @huy_ngo @mcsinyx Have you got it usable? If so I would be damn thankful if you could share your tricks with me :D

@gamey
look into the keyboard shortcuts. and you have the users on the right, chanels on the left. you can type /toggle users and the are gone. channels too. later ctrl-k and tab to switch...and yes, its also under /help
@huy_ngo @mcsinyx

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey Go --kiosk with Firefox for Hydrogen, that works okayish for me. Worse than --ssb, but..
The Nheko issue (where it gets weirdly colored after changing chats) is PinePhone (Lima?) specific - I did not encounter it on the Librem5. Sadly, angelfish-webapp does not seem to work on Phosh, it would be a decent Firefox SSB replacement. I use it with Hydrogen on Plasma Mobile.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@gamey Also, you might want to try the chatty beta release - should be easy to build for Arch or pmOS.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@linmob I tried to build it on device but there is a dependency that appears to be huge (can't remember the name) which also needs the beta branch for chatty to work.

RAGE Pinephone Matrix

@linmobThanks I will try the FF thing and Gomuks to see what works best.
