Disconnecting from big tech social networks works if you have an existing, fulfilling life. If you're like me and are alone and looking for friends and a social life, it's very difficult being limited to the Fediverse.

I've been told I'm "wrong" in the past and it's my fault because the Fediverse is just as viable as other options. But the honest truth is I miss out on events, concerts, meetups and opportunities because I refuse to be active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

@gabek This! If your real life is filled with like-minded, privacy-and-tech-centric friends and family, a place like the fed is perfect - but outside of that, the fed just isn't "there" yet.

@gabek If you're looking to hang out and get a beer, I don't think the other social media sites would assist with that, either. I had one person here a year or two ago trying quite aggressively to become real-life friends without creating any kind of initial connection. Most people aren't down for that.

@gabek Definitely not trying to invalidate your experience. It's been a while since I've been a social user on the bird site.

@gabek I don’t think this is a failing of the Fediverse, rather the addiction and mind share of the other platforms. Their pull and influence on people is real, and that’s exactly what they want. They provide the dopamine hits, and when that’s all people know it’s challenging to open their eyes to other services. I’m not sure what the answer to this challenge is.

@gabek That’s a good point, though I’d be more inclined to use web search as opposed to Twitter, even if I still had my account. You could still go ahead and search Twitter without an account, and still have the benefits of those kinds of things that get shared?

@gabek Yeah that’s fair, very well put. And unless those communities have a forum, email group, chat, or other alternative methods outside mainstream social media channels — seems very unlikely — then what?

@gabek To be fair, my misery is more from evil forces outside the Fediverse, but I hear you. 😉

@gabek @pete Hi there, in your case I would continue using other platforms for searching events if you don't find that here, don't think that going so radical discarding other options would help in anything TBH. That's what freedom is about.

@gabek I have one strong source of community and my family is close which helps. I honestly don't know how people meet each other any more though. Are there like intramural sports near you?

@gabek dance lessons? I've considered them myself, after reading an article about activities to try, but I just don't have the money right now

@gabek ah. I read local newspapers, ask around, look at ad walls at coffee shops, etc. That's how I hear about them
