Proud dad moment - we’re talking about something, my wife and I can’t remember the name of it.

So my oldest son (6) says “Google it? Actually, no, Duck Duck Goose it!”

He’s a chip off the old block!

@raimondaslapinskas @kev
He meant the searx instance hosted by @trom at

Unlike duckduckgo, searx has no ads. So no need to trade your attention (through ads) or privacy (through data collection) for the service :)

@futureisfoss i dont see the harm in DDG ads. They support the project and are relevant to the search query.

Ads don’t necessarily mean badness.

This video is a couple of years old, but I think most of it is still relevant -

While data collection is about reading your mind, ads are about infiltrating your mind. Both are equally bad IMO. I used to be one of those people who don't care about data collection or advertisements, but as I learned more about the negative impacts of both, I changed my mind :)

@kev @raimondaslapinskas
Also, why do we have to turn everything into a businesses ? 🤷

I like fosstodon because it doesn't have any kind of ads, data collection, premium features etc, and I'm forever thankful for it. And most of the other instances work the same way. To me, this is proof that we can do things differently :)

@trom provides dozens of online services at, without any kind of trade, ie, no data collection, ads, paid features, etc.

@futureisfoss everything doesn’t have to be a business, but DDG clearly is a business, Mastodon is not. There are no ads etc, bit this wouldn’t be sustainable if we were to do this anything other than a side project.

Ads and data collection are different things. I have no problem with ethical ads, like the ones on DDG.

If you do, that’s up to you. It’s a personal choice. Lucky for us, other projects exist.

@raimondaslapinskas @trom

@futureisfoss however, most of the other search engines, like searx, use Google results. It’s a false economy - you think if Google stopped serving those ads you would have searx et al?

Not sire if they still do, but DDG use Bing too.

I suppose what I’m trying to say, is that search is a big incestuous shit show and we all just need to make a choice we’re happy with. Ultimately everything filters back to big tech.

@raimondaslapinskas @trom

@kev @raimondaslapinskas @trom
True, we don't have a good independent search engine as of now. is the only one I know, and it would be sustainable cause it uses a peer to peer technology. But from my testing, p2p systems are not very reliable as of now.

I hope that these p2p technologies improve in the future, cause they're the only way for us to be truly free from big tech and the like.

If you want, you can watch the full documentary here -

This video I sent is just one part of the whole documentary :)

TROM is currently working on a new documentary called TROM II as a sequel to their first documentary.
