Miss the good ol’ days of social media, where it was all community and conversations? Then let’s shake things up!
I am calling the entire #HomeAssistant community: it’s time to join BlueSky! Bring your #SmartHome projects, questions, and that classic HA enthusiasm. Let’s rebuild that vibe we all miss and make social media fun once more
.
Who’s in? Share your BlueSky profile!
@frenck Damned. I just deleted my account there for reasons.
@frenck Thanks for the invite! I prefer doing that building on _not_ BlueSky, but very nice sentiment :)
@frenck Nah, I’d rather stay here. We don’t need corporation-driven social media platforms like Xitter, we’ve seen what they can do. Why not build a thing here (with occasional exchanges with threads users)?
@spitfire Honestly, I think BS (gotta love the abbrev) works well. It is quite fun over there
I also understand concerns. My experience with Mastodon hasn’t been the best (random admin just pulling the plug on servers, loosing my account and the ability to migrate, and some very questionable moderation or server-specific rules).
So in a fairness, I’m not sure where it all will end. But I am having a good time on multiple platforms right now, and BS surprised me the most.
@frenck I’ve opened my account(s - on multiple instances) years ago (back in 2017 when it was new?) mostly to reserve a username, but it didn’t go anywhere until Musk pulled the plug on 3rd party clients for Twitter, so I immediately pulled plug on Twitter (only used it for tools that helped me find people I were following there on Mastodon). (1/2)
I’m pretty happy about how it turned out, because even though I lost some follows and followers it is generally more quality and less traffic. (2/2)
@frenck is this open source?
@HarlemSquirrel yes, at least I think most of it is.
@frenck not until it's less monolithic. I'm not making that mistake again.
@jonathan funny enough, while Mastodon is nice in concept, I had negative experiences with it as well. Like an admin pulling the plug all of a sudden, making me loosing access to my data and account; also weird moderation or federation decisions and specific odd server rules. I like it here too, but it ain’t sunshine either tbh. I fly around multiple platforms for now.
@frenck I’m in love with #homeAssistant but not enough to open a #bluesky account :-)
@frenck As much as I am an enthusiastic #homeassistant user I strongly disagree with your call. BigTech / locked-in social networks are a fundamentally bad idea. I have left Twitter for a reason (like millions of other sane people) and I am not going to throw myself at the next locked-in network like a dumb lemming.
In the same way as I will also never buy a Tesla as I don't want to support a Fascist. Do I have to drive "less fun" cars? Maybe, but this is a price I am more than willing to pay.
@frenck The good old days of social media I am experiencing here, on Mastodon. I don't need anything else.
@frenck No, sorry. I use Home Assistant because I want less control from big corporations. That’s s why I self-host and use community driven services or services from smaller companies as much as I can.
@frenck I will stay here
@frenck how about #HomeAssistant sets up a Mastodon instance?
@staustellsimon Hehe maybe… one day! Right now, we have enough things to work on
@frenck @staustellsimon
Setting up an instance is probably overkill anyway
@staustellsimon @frenck A #Homeassistant plugin that runs a (lightweight) Fediverse server!
@frenck nah bluesky is not really decentralised, and it's still just vc funded corporate entity that is likely to enshittify
@frenck I love Home Assistant, but no thank you, I’m fine here!
@Pierrodu21 and that’s all right! I will be here as on other platforms as well. Nevertheless I do hope to see a presence of our community on all kinds of social communities
@frenck I’m good here thanks. I like the community. No adverts. No tracking. No algorithms. I suspect the people who want to go there are already there.
@frenck Is self-hosting now possible? Otherwise it would be just another US service for me at the moment.
Or is there something great that's really different and better than Mastodon, for example?
@frenck I expect you knew what the response would be like, posting a 'move to twitter 2.0' on something open like mastodon...
I saw your comments about your server being taken down unexpectedly, but there are a lot that are in the it for the long run, and I agree with the folk suggesting HA start a server. Mastodon isn't going to die, but blue-sky will eventually eat itself just like ye original.
@frenck Hey Franck, I'm happy here thanks - and I'm wary of BS. It's just one person's opinion, but maybe read this: https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/ulysses-pact/
#HomeAssistant
@ChrisWarwick Yeah have seen/read it. Mastodon has issues of its own though… In the end, I just want to be able to support the HA community, no matter on which platform they are. The community should be where they are, which is everywhere
@frenck HomeAssistant is one of the best things that happened in sw community and I have deep respect for all developers. I'm using every spare minute to tinker with it.
I especially like its sentiment - opennes and independence from corporates/walled gardens. It goes well hand in hand with fediverse sentiment.
But this call (join corpo sm walled garden) somewhat (negatively) surprises me.
So - thanks, but no thanks. Here is a good place. If fediverse fails, I'm out of social for good.
@po3mah I think it ain’t that one or the other. I like to experience and support the community regardless of platform. I want to be where the HA community is: which is everywhere. Choice is an important pillar of HA and I like to support that. That said, I am here as well and stay here as well, as this is also a place where many of our community are.
@frenck I understand how difficult is to support a community that is scattered among different social m. It's like the story about the father, the son, and the donkey.
Nevertheless, it sends a message if a prominent figure like you advertises BS.
Good that you will stay here.
@po3mah “a prominent figure like you” oh euh thanks I guess!
But honestly, it isn’t difficult. Everyone has been everywhere for a long time. Including Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, YouTube, insta, custom forums, and many others. It is nice to see communities thriving on all of them, in their own ways. I would support them on every single one of those platform really.
@frenck nope, I stay away from centralised ad driven services for the same reason I use #homeAssisstant
Seems a little tone deaf to be encouraging bluesky use on here, tbh
@WiteWulf honestly, as a supporter of open source in general I am trying to support any community out there, I think it is far from being tone deaf. I just want to be supportive of any social community out there, and not just stare blindly at Mastodon. People have choice in what they like nowadays.
If you really still think that is being tone deaf, than I am sorry for your limited view on it.
Nevertheless, good to hear you are supportive of Mastodon, so am I. I am here as well afterall.
@frenck No thank you but I have to admit that call really surprised me, after the open home foundation and everything.
@jfparis I can understand that. The response here on Mastodon is strong!
But there is choice as well, I am here, but also on other platforms, supporting the people and the open source communities wherever they are.
Every platform has flaws, and everybody can make their own choice; yet I want support them regardless of platform.
@frenck nope mastodon is the way!
@fernsehmuell hehe happy to hear you like it here! I haven’t figured out THE way myself, but agreed it surelu looks like it is a good way
@frenck
It's weird because you describe here, but then suggest going somewhere else that's proprietary.
@frenck absolutely not. They have moderation issues that are only getting worse and I don’t have any desire to participate in HA discussions on a venture capital funded platform.
