We have been asked about the longevity of Fosstodon, especially since a number of key instances have gone.

Hopefully this post will allay any concerns. TL;DR - we got your back!

@fosstodon the great thing about federation is that it’s resilient against this sort of thing. If one or more instances go down, more will come up and fill the void. The user data is easily exported and reimported into new instances, so, not much will be lost if people are diligent.

@ndegruchy @fosstodon not true yet, the import and export features are still lacking on Mastodon. It's getting there though, people are working on it

@Matter @ndegruchy @fosstodon numbers speak for themselves, my view is that mastodon is a unique base (despite being a reaction to Twitter) people tend to create parallel (or copy) apps. I feel we need to leverage (aka purpose) the basic architecture for various collab needs, such as photography (why I am here in the first place, not just tooting my trunk/horn)

@Matter @ndegruchy @fosstodon another important feature is that we are highly-rated by search engines, hated Google for one - we are famous, getting famous-er
