Hi - I'm new. I used to run a pleroma instance a couple of years back, and I have some presence on port-70 #gopher and now port-1965 #gemini where I'm writing at gemini://subphase.xyz
My dayjob is in front-end Web tech but I'm more interested in unix-derivative computing, the command line, sustainable/solarpunk tech. I'm also into cycling, trekking & camping, urban gardening, vinyl audio (dub, electronica, lo-fi hip-hop), communisation theory/praxis. Favourite shape: hexagon.
I had a real 'reset' weekend this weekend just gone; some detoxing (weaning myself off the higher levels of caffeine I'd made a daily reality), a huge sort out of my possessions and my home (pictured: a sort-out of my vinyl records and some 'shortlisting' of what to keep in the box as far away from sunlight fade as possible). This kind-of reset is great for my headspace and also marking a new moment/vibe.

I've put together a survey about the Small Internet (#gopher, #gemini, individual webpages, small community sites) and I would love your input. If you are a small internet user, please spend a few minutes and fill in your thoughts. I'm especially interested in the open response questions. This will help inform an upcoming conference talk I'll be giving at https://mch2022.org
Also, please boost this on fedi as much as possible and feel free to re-share on other social networks and in other communities. The more responses the better.
This week's #DJmix is another dancey but fairly chilled affair.
Recorded live for a fundraiser during lockdown a couple of years ago it marked my return to the decks after a seven-year hiatus.
It's probably my most summery mix ever, so grab yourself a cocktail (or not) and head over to https://hearthis.at/axwax/axwax-easy-gain-project-summer-solstice-2020-part-1/
Sorry for the Twitter link but I know a lot of people here (myself included) are big Verso Books fans, they're currently in dispute with management over union recognition: https://mobile.twitter.com/VersoUnionUK/status/1540381615712415744?t=oV7OhcsPUcyHte5cDiPCdw&s=09
New Gemini post on K-punk (Mark Fisher) + reference to today's widespread industrial action on the rail network in the UK (solidarity!): gemini://subphase.xyz/users/flow/gemlog/31-kpunk-haunts-gemini.gmi
⚠️ Avoid #Chromium-based browsers: Websites can detect what addons are installed by fetching their web-accessible resources. Try yourself: https://z0ccc.github.io/extension-fingerprints
This is yet another possible way of #tracking users all across the internet. However, there's a simple solution: Just use #Firefox.
Since the IDs of Firefox extensions are unique for every user, it is not possible to know or guess the addresses of their web-accessible resources.
Someone had a granite headstone made for Internet Explorer and placed it beside a tiny church on the rooftop of a cafe in Gyeongju, South Korea: https://m.clien.net/service/board/park/17331335
If I was a more solid sysadmin, I'd like to open up subphase.xyz to digital squatters. In the same vein as squatting, though, I'd want our community to share some values and 'take care of the place together', somehow :)
Day-dreaming a bit lately about the server space we have available across parts of the IndieNet and how much spare we might have going for more of our communities. A capsule, blog server or 'digital garden' can be a great individual space, but there's also *loads* more space on your average VPS than a given IndieNet server can/may run (right?). PUBNIX offers a great community space and allows a community to stretch into server-space. Can we think of PUBNIX as a kind of digital 'squat'?
I haven't looked into this much yet - thought I'd ask on here first
and see if anyone has a neat tip. I've wondered what the options may
be for setting up subscriptions server-side and then subscribing to
these on my own devices (and also publishing my subscription feed on
my capsule as well..)
#gemini friends - what's the best way you've found to subscribe to
capsules? Im recently somewhat rejoining gemspace as a reader and
enjoy floating, digging and finding stuff, but I also want to
subscribe to different capsules. Problem is I'm across 2 devices and I
also sometimes use a different browser also...
many software development practices seem to me highly influenced by the institutional structure of software companies: bureaucratic, specialized, individualistic, disposable, goal-oriented.
Many engineers are frustrated with the state of software, but to me, software is a reflection of the broken institutions that create it
I'm interested in: lightweight, sustainable tech; permacomputing; unix philosophy & *nix systems; software studies; computational culture; digitality; media theory & (weird media) practice.
I'm also into: DJing (vinyl + DVS), cycling, climbing, camping, wild-swimming.
