Please take this survey about AI/ML and Fedora. We know that this is a sensitive subject, so the Fedora Council spent time putting a survey together to understand what our community thinks about this area of technology.
Last day to take the survey is July 31.

@fedora watch people blow this up into FEDORA ADDING COPILOT?!?!?! LINUX DRAMA #8340 (THIS ONE WILL BLOW YOUR MIND)
@fedora Finally, someone who asks for a community opinion first. Curious to see what use-cases would be considered. Please none of the hype-driven ones though.
@fedora I'll leave here a copy of my answer to the freeform question:
"Considering you clearly state that "Fedora will only include software and content that is free and open source", and just about ALL generative AI models have been trained on non-free or open source data, I fail to see how it will be possible for Fedora to integrate AI in ANY of its products or processes, because even if the software running is FOSS, its underlying data is not.
It would be, in my opinion, contrary to the FOSS ethos to implement such systems into a FOSS project, because AI systems are, by and large, based on exploiting data that is obtained in at best legally questionable ways."
@nanianmichaels @fedora you should have a look at InstructLab and the Granite family of models. It's a start in the right direction
@fedora thank you for asking first
We can agree that @fedora council is in the right mind if they prepare a survey about such subject. I don't expect it to end on one tinsy questionaire, so keep asking! We as a community are eager to provide opinions and suggestions.
@fedora I fear the survey might be written to much from a "searching for a problem for the solution" perspective. I nevertheless hope the resulting decisions will be reasonable in the end.
@fedora the only things i see “AI/ML” useful for in Fedora’s near future are speech-to-text/text-to-speech, which can be useful for accessibility. Voted no on everything else.
@fedora very strange that Fedora has been so strict on legal licenses for multimedia that it refused to ship working video playback, but in jumps AI/ML on the back of the largest theft of IP in human history and you're willing to go all in on it
The survey questionnaire is still loaded. You're just fishing for the least objectionable place to try your luck.
@fedora AI/ML are fine, but please no Generative AI.
@fedora the survey is very biased towards allowing uses of the theft machines; shame on you
@fedora@fosstodon.org Thanks for asking first, rly.
@fedora
Gods above. I have just moved to Fedora after finally ditching Ubuntu, and sure don't want to have to move again. Please don't jump the AI hype waggon.

Thank you kindly.
@fedora "is AI useful" is not a question for a survey. You're asking for opinions on something that is factual or not. You're asking 1000 people what the weather will be like next weekend. Good luck with these results. Please do not base any important decisions on this.
@fedora certainly none please!
@fedora AI is a Security Risk, So No Thanks, I hope you don't put AI in Fedora, If you do, I'll change Distro
Not sure where to find the results. The survey itself is offline now ...
