I can't move to the Fediverse properly until I reproduce my famous pinned post from the birdsite, so here it is:

P.S.A. To all vintage computer and video game collectors:

Go through your collections and GET THE DAMN BATTERIES OUT!

Now! Don't wait! Seriously, put down the phone, go to your collection and take out all the batteries. Right now! Even if they look "okay" they are NOT SAFE after this much time.

So... the car wouldn't start with the new key, why was that?

It'd act like it wanted to start, it would turn the starter motor and sound like it wanted to start so I assumed the problem was somewhere else.

It turns out there's this little tiny chip that's supposed to be in the car key that communicates a code to the car somehow, I have no idea how it works!

M2's orientation was restored yesterday-ish and 137MHz LRPT was permanently turned back on today! Back to service little satellite and I hope you get many more years of service.

LRPT image below.

Opened it up! It's quite filthy and the battery has a deep scratch in it, it's also very dead.

I spent a few hours trying to find a replacement button but I couldn't find one, I'll probably order some from AliExpress.

I've severely overpaid for a new OEM shell, I don't even want to name the price. It's quite painful and annoying but I hope it'll be worth it...

At least that's what I'm trying to say to myself.

I'm on car key repair duty tonight, it looks so sad!

Reception of Meteor-M N2-2 HRPT image data at 1700 MHz using a stationary, omnidirectional antenna.
Image quality is poor, but as a proof of concept it shows that omnidirectional reception at 1.7 GHz would be possible if the satellites used a more specialized downlink

apparently my elderly neighbor has been maintaining a personal website about the history of UK photography and it is an incredible piece of work.

apparently he still uses some piece of adobe software from the 90s. there is so much care and effort here, and its such a pristine image of the early web being still updated 😭

Interesting power flicker just now, power was gone for 5~ seconds and even cellular internet was offline... Computers did a graceful shutdown!

Hasn't happened in 10+ years and it's the middle of the day, that was fun :ablobcatneon:

I've put the other wiimote in a ziplock bag, it could be able to be saved with a hot air gun...

Opening up the next one doesn't seem good, some kind of black foam was on that gross chip and it's sticky. I'm guessing it got so hot it started burning it? I'm not sure.

These are all teeny tiny components but I'll clean it up and try my luck.

Here's hoping Meteor M2-3 won't have these issues if it ever launches and that the (underpaid) staff at Roscosmos can get M2's systems back up and running!

M2 has been through *a lot* and it's definitely getting old now, hope it stays healthy! I love these things :ablobcatbongo:

Images I posted were all captured by @dereksgc!

They've shut the VHF transmitter off a while ago now, I'm assuming this is to preserve battery as the solar panels definitely aren't performing nearly as well with the satellite spinning like this.

I believe this satellite transmits on terms of contracts from companies, I'm assuming that's why they haven't turned other transmitters off? This is just a complete guess from my end though.

Show thread

This free spinning is a common issue with the Meteor satellites and is actually dangerous for the satellite.

I believe this is also how Meteor M1 died, a loss of attitude control systems/staring at the sun too long.

Show thread

Meteor M2 has been off-axis for a few days again making some interesting pictures... I'm anxious and I hope they can get it to respond and rotate back around.

I've made a bunch of progress on this wiimote but I'm not sure if I have the skills or equipment to reflow these components, unless someone has any tips?

Show thread

It *might* be able to be saved, but the pad is bent and I'm not sure how to remove all this corrosion especially from the chip.
