Friends don't let friends run servers on local time.

Always use UTC.


Sure, if you have just one server, run it however you want, but only if you're sure you'll never have a second.

But you will get a second server. That first server is just your gateway (pun intended) server. You'll get another.

UTC avoids timezone math. If you compare logs on two hosts, with different time zones, 12:34:56 is not the same on both hosts. You need to do math.

Don't do math. Errors will occur at the time when you really can't afford errors.

Local times can also mess with cron jobs.

If a cronjob is scheduled for the time period when a shift to/from daylight savings occurs, you get either 0 jobs or 2 jobs.

Think: backup jobs.
