Hi folks! 9 years ago (to the day), the late Aaron Swartz made the first commit to SecureDrop, which was then called DeadDrop. Today the project is used by >70 media orgs around the world.
It's an open source whistleblower submission platform that uses the Tor network to protect source anonymity. We're also working on a next-generation integrated workstation for journalists based on Qubes OS:

The Open University's "Introduction to Cybersecurity" is a free, massively open online course that covers a wide range of infosec subjects in a way that's both accessible and rigorous.

I'm a Visiting Professor in OU's computer science department, and I was honoured to serve as the introducer and host for the course.

Messaging App Signal Threatens to Dump US Market if #Anti-#Encryption Bill Passes
#Signal is calling on its users to oppose the EARN IT Act, which it fears will be used to undermine end-to-end encryption, forcing it to leave the US market. https://www.pcmag.com/news/messaging-app-signal-threatens-to-dump-us-market-if-anti-encryption-bill
"the climate emergency risks far more lives than coronavirus. The market cannot solve that problem either, it only makes it worse. So for the good of all humanity, we have to see coronavirus as a wake-up call. The market will not save us."

Measures to fight the #COVID19Pandemic could open the door for more #surveillance, strengthen authoritarians and endanger democracies. History teaches us that we must take this threat very seriously: https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/corona-surveillance-tracking-privacy-authoritarian #CoronavirusOutbreak
"ratcheting up surveillance to combat the pandemic now could permanently open the doors to more invasive forms of snooping later. It is a lesson Americans learned after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001..." https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/23/technology/coronavirus-surveillance-tracking-privacy.html

What's the bet I feck it up?
Here's a brilliant comment about the affordability of a universal basic income. #ubi
I briefly studied the Dutch welfare system while in uni (from a Foucauldian perspective, it was 🔥🔥), and saw up close how people were being stomped on and degraded just to receive some funds to survive. It's a horribly inhumane system. Hopefully the #covid19 pandemic provides us with an opportunity to look at alternatives.
COVID-19 is exposing a lot of truths.
The free market is useless in any kind of crisis. It is barely functional in terms of mobilising labour and resources in the best conditions, it is flat out useless when things are tough - and things are going to get tough as the climate worsens and the oil runs out.
It turns out that the people paid the least in society are the most important, and many highly regarded jobs just aren't all that important.
A global network of activists are tracking #Surveillance #DataExploitation #Misinformation by tech companies and governments in the global fight against #COVID19
But we need your help.
Have a look at the measures so far⬇️⬇️
And if you can, help us❤️❤️
