Tried taking the Honda Grom down some corrugated roads today. The sport tyres weren't a problem, but the suspension *really* doesn't like it.
@dHeinemann LOL!!! It can’t be as bad as my scooter’s suspension
@SeaFury I don't know what your scooter's like, but the Grom's suspension is short and kind of rough. I'm not sure if it's actually bottoming out (I'm not particularly heavy) or if it just doesn't do a great job of dampening the bumps.
Still fun, but I need to take it pretty slow to keep it manageable. Definitely going to get an Adv or dual sport for the next bike.
@dHeinemann which bikes are you looking at? My scoot is so cheep
@SeaFury I'm really tempted to get a Honda CRF300 Rally because they're light, low-maintenance, have big suspension, are just about indestructible, and will be able to take me anywhere in Australia.
I'm just a bit unsure about highway performance, considering I'll mostly be riding on-road. It should be able to sit on 100-110 km though. A bigger adv would be more practical, but they either cost a lot more or have to sacrifice other features I want, like the above.
@dHeinemann I like light vehicles. Even my car is small. I can lift my scooter on my own. Very handy when I need to move it a tight spot in the garage. (Can’t lift my car though ) the CRF300 looks pretty cool, prob not for me as the seat is kinda high. I’m not that good at riding yet! I agree, the ADV would be better on highway. If this is your only mode of transport, highway capability would be more important to consider.
@SeaFury I like light/compact vehicles too. Getting a Suzuki Swift for a car is one of the best things I ever did. I get 8.5 L/100 km (probably better than some of the worst motorcycles) and it's SO easy to park. 4 cylinders of fury!
I think I can put up with highway discomfort on the CRF300. Can't be worse than the Grom, surely! People always talk about how bad the Grom is on the highway, but I don't find it too uncomfortable. I'd do it more if it could at least cruise at 100 km/hr.
@dHeinemann I LOLed thinking of a Grom in the highway You must post about your new bike when you get it!
@SeaFury Other candidates are the KTM 690 Enduro R and Husqvarna 701 (basically the same bike). They'd be great both on-and off-road, but they cost twice as much, aren't as reliable, and require an unrestricted license which rules them out unless I want to wait another 18 months and then hunt around for a good deal on a used bike.
There's also still the Interceptor. Not so practical off-road, but it's great for the highway and hard to beat its classic styling.
Maybe I'll have to get both.
@dHeinemann Groms have suspension?
@arnandegans Not enough!
@dHeinemann heh, probably a space constraint
@arnandegans Yeah, at the end of the day it's a toy bike really. Amazing for commuting and riding around the city. I like pushing it a little bit because I'm still figuring out what bike I want to upgrade to, and I think I'd definitely like something a bit more dirt-friendly.
I've seen people go to insane measures to mod and upgrade their Grom, but it's not really practical.
@dHeinemann kids bikes really
@arnandegans We're all kids at heart.
