If @mike and @kev are in charge of Fosstodon does that make them.....Fossto Dons?.....

All things considered (productivity, privacy, features, functionality, etc.), what's your favorite laptop/desktop OS and why? Hoping to give inexperienced members the opportunity to see some opinions and experiences.

Ok new folks...you've been lurking long enough. Go ahead and drop that toot and tell us a bit about yourself. πŸ˜€

A big "welcome" to all of our new members! We're approaching the 15.5k member mark and it's showing. It's refreshing to see so many conversations about projects and personal achievements! So many are trying new distros or open source projects. πŸ˜„

Again, welcome, and thanks for choosing to be a part of πŸ™‚

As the year comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to extend my appreciation to all of you for the good times and laughs, throughout 2020. She's been a hell of a year but, we made it. From loved ones lost to great successes, this year has been a wild roller coaster of a ride. Whether you're working or enjoying it with loved ones, I hope all of you enjoy bringing in the new year and do so, safely.

Thanks, again, for making Fosstodon such a fun atmosphere and great community.

Don't forget to let us know which FOSS projects that you'd like us to support! Submissions will be open until 10/25.

pics are starting to roll in! Where's yours? Let's see those desktop environments!

We've had loads of new folks join Fosstodon, over the last few months. There are plenty of articles/blogs on FOSS friendly alternatives out there, and suggestions for such but, it'd be nice to hear from the community. What apps/alternatives are you using and why? What would you suggest for someone who's new to the FOSS scene? What have you discovered, based on your experiences?

Let's give our newer/unfamiliar members some community input and a few "pro tips" πŸ˜‰

I've seen a few toots and pics from some serious stickerholics out there. Some of you guys have some pretty loaded canvases on the backs of your laptops and devices.

Let's see what you have! Time to show off the collection. Extra points for anyone sporting a sticker. πŸ˜‰

Let's see those toots! You know you hopped distros 1 or 374 times, this week. 😜 Show us where you landed. Let's see those specs and that cool desktop wallpaper.

I know I've mentioned it recently but, I'll say it again: I'm glad to see all the new faces and introductory toots for all the new members. A "thanks" to all of our existing members and vets for helping field some of the questions and welcome the new members. It's very helpful and much appreciated. πŸ˜€

Thank you to everyone for the open source project submissions! We're no longer taking submissions as we'll soon begin allowing our Patreons to vote on them and narrow it down to 2 candidates for our donations. If you're still interested in helping us decide which projects to support, you can join us at

A big "thanks" to all of our current/past supporters as these types of things wouldn't be possible without you.

Just a quick reminder that we're looking to make 2 donations to a couple of open source projects. We need you to submit some worthy candidates! Please check the link, below, for more information. We'll stop taking submissions on Friday 6/26.

As recently mentioned, Fosstodon is preparing to make 2 donations to a couple of open source projects, in the amount of $200 each. We need our Fosstodon members' input on where to send those donations. Use the below link to submit the info for an open source project that you'd like us to support!

We'll stop taking submissions, on 6/26. At that time, our Fosstodon Patreons will vote on those submissions and narrow it down to 2 entries.

Regarding our support for open source projects: If you're interested in having a say on where the donations will go, you can sign up to become a Patreon, using the link below.

A HUGE "thanks!" to all of our current Patreons, as we wouldn't be able to do this awesome stuff without you guys!

So, you've joined Fosstodon and are wondering, "now, how does this work?"

One thing that sets Fosstodon apart from traditional social media outlets (and some other instances) is the community's willingness to help and offer valuable feedback. This is especially true with new members.

Please don't hesitate to raise a hand (toot) and ask questions. If you prefer some reading material, @kev has written a great article to help you get started:

A big "welcome!" to all of our new members. It's great to see all the new faces and the steady flow of introductory toots!

For those members (new and old) that don't know, hub.fosstodon.org/ is full of information that is relative to our instance. From staff members to our Code of Conduct, you can find more information about Fosstodon! Make sure to check it out and, if you haven't already done so, make your first toot and tell us a bit about yourself.

Ok I'm my way over to (PopOS) and giving it a whirl.

So far, is looking pretty clean but, I've not had time to really explore it. So, here's my toot.

If you haven't had a chance to participate, make sure to share a screen shot of your environment. You can install/run to display stats. In any case, LETS SEE THOSE LINUX DESKTOPS!!! πŸ˜€

With Mastodon having a few years under it's belt now, how are your friends/family reacting to you using it vs. the traditional social media outlets? Have you been able to convince anyone to come over and check it out or start using it exclusively? What are the arguments that you're hearing for using Facebook/IG/Twitter, etc. over Mastodon?
