FLOSS contributor words of wisdom:

"Don't take criticism from people you would never go to for advice"

@codesections Wait, isn't that also the philosophy behind Rust?

As it's the 10th anniversary of Minecraft, a reminder that there's a free open alternative called Minetest:

minetest.net/

You can follow it on the Fediverse at:

@Minetest

It has many game modes including online multiplayer servers.

Need favicon designed. Any designer recommendations?

Tried following the instructions on git-send-email.io/ and it's actually less complicated than I thought it would be

I keep trying to grin and getting an autocorrect to :debian: instead of :D

Sometimes real life actually *is* easier

Please remember that #Git is by nature distributed. So when migrating from (for example) #GitHub to (for example) #GitLab please, please, please do NOT create a brand new repository and git add the files, or the entire commit history will be lost. Instead, just push the existing repository to your new hosting service.

"Can we all please stop using Medium now?"

Good post by @pastaduck@twitter.com.

If you really must use Medium, publish the post first on your own blog and then use "Import a story" feature within Medium to post it there too. You get best of both worlds that way.

I'll be looking into community / mesh networks this weekend. Does anyone in the have any experience with these?

By the time I bothered learning React, the support in already made it easy.

Scrolling through my timeline, I see several toots that looked like I boosted them—but I didn't do so on purpose. Sorry if I cluttered up anyone's timeline!

Looking for a password manager. Anyone have any recommendations?

Does Angular count as FOSS? I'm trying to avoid supporting google when I can, I know Angular is under the MIT license, but I also know it's owned and maintained by google... Am I supporting google by trying to take up Angular?

Any xmobar gurus here?

I am looking for config files as examples.
Thanks!

Functional programming fans, a challenge:

Here are two problems I've needed to solve lately where I don't see any reasonable way to do them with your average set of basic functional tools and immutable data, and instead I've ended up having to write very procedural loops-and-mutable-arrays type of code.

That code is generally not very satisfying to look at, but I just don't know any other reasonable solution, so, I'd love to hear how you would solve these:

Type system idea: the three type composition operators are ^ (product), | (sum), and ~ (name). Structs are just product types with each part having a name.

type point = x~int ^ y~int

type bool = true~() | false~()

type shape =
circle~(c~point ^ r~int)
| square~(tl~point ^ br~point)

Should ^ be commutative? If each side is named, then I would want that, but that seems a little inconsistent.

x~int ^ y~int === y~int ^ x~int
but
x^y !== y^x

Thoughts?

I'd like to pandoc today. Absolutely brilliant tool to convert between many text formats. When writing a scientific paper in markdown but promotors only work with docx, this gem saves the day.
