How high can Markdown count?

999,999,999

(Not even a joke; that's the highest number Markdown lists allow, per the spec. Of course, if you even need to put a billion items in a Markdown list, you *may* have other problems.)

How high can Markdown count?

@codesections Bigger problem is you can't set the value, so you can't have a non-continuous ordered list. I often end up with
in my mmd files.

Well, you can't *quite* have a non-continuous ordered list. But you *can* start a new list at a different start value:

2. item

5. item

renders as:

item

item

@codesections Renders as 1. 2. in multimarkdown and Gruber's, but 2. 5. in Markoff (which uses cmark).

@mdhughes Yeah, fair, when I said "Markdown", I really meant Common Markdown/Cmark

@codesections Does this include nesting? Can you have 999,999,999 items in a list where each of those items contains a list with 999,999,999 items 🤔

Just...you know...asking for a friend.

@codesections wait. The CSS hack I've been using to number sections in markdown is not needed? Subscribe me to this newsletter.
