Oregon Coast Trail Why do these GPUs just keep getting bigger!? This is not how tech is supposed to work.

@codemonkeymike These things take up like 3.5 or 4 slots now. It's absolutely ridiculous. They're hotter, more power hungry, and more expensive.

I have a feeling these are basically just AI tools now, and don't really have any bearing on what people used to use GPUs for

@killyourfm @codemonkeymike I haven't used the new 5xxx yet (obv) but they generally have a higher PEAK power but not a higher power usage at idle or running existing tasks. Pretty much every previous jump was like this, for instance my 4090 CAN pull 530 watts, but in practice it runs between 40-100 watts for most games and is in general slightly lower than the 3xxx series was at running identically. Push it to the limit doing something a 3xxx can't do though? yeah, this thing can pull a LOT.
