I need your help #linux family.
Please tell me reasons NOT to order a #RaspberryPi 500!
I don't need it, I don't need it, I don't need it.... right?
@codemonkeymike No NVME for SSD is a real bummer. Otherwise, it's a neat little package.
I'm kind of done with using SD for OS storage and the form factor loses some benefits if you're tied to an external drive bay.
@eoinoneill @codemonkeymike
Yeah. I agree. It would make a nice little Linux machine to tinker and use. Maybe Raspberry Pi will make a "Pro" version that will have an m.2 nvme slot. They will have to find a easier way to get access to it though.
@mick_the_linux_geek yeah... i just watched a video and they even have a spot for the NVME but doesn't support it. What a tease!
Yeah you got that right.
@mick_the_linux_geek @eoinoneill @codemonkeymike prob come with ssd pre-installed
£150 for a pi 500 plus with a reasonable sized ssd sounds good though
@hollowman @eoinoneill @codemonkeymike
Oh yes! That would be a better route to go for sure.
@eoinoneill @codemonkeymike yea, honestly a similar design that uses a cm5 and breaks out all the peripherals would be way preferred. Especially since then it would be upgradable with other compute modules.
@codemonkeymike If I had a hacker-y kid I would totally get them one, but it's not something I need.
@codemonkeymike If you look inside you will see the board has placement for an NVMe support chip and space for M.2 adapters, but none exist.
Now you will think of not having in-built NVMe storage every day while owning that computer.
@codemonkeymike as someone who has a lot of pi4's and some pi5's the 5's haven't really impressed me over the 4's, yes, they're a lot faster at some things but i've found in day to day use it ends up being only marginally better than the 4 due to having to do a LOT more in software that was hardware supported in the 4. (they dropped most video support, including all encoding, even a lot of the firmware functionality for cropping output needs to be done in software now)
@codemonkeymike so essentially, what you'll find is somethings like compiling will be faster but desktop use and especially browser use on the 500 is at best the same as the 400, and you'll have major issues hooking it to certain screens. (two of my big screens the sides are unreadable because the 5's firmware no longer supports overscan, so you can't hook it to a LOT of tv's.)
@scooter yeah there is a new one!
@codemonkeymike It's nice for sure, but given the rate of new products, I would save the money for now.
The form factor is very fixed (for me) and imagine how cool the next iteration of the screen would be if it was touchscreen.
The 500 is cool and is really good for some, but I am waiting for the next Pi Zero.
@plwt right on. Yeah I def do not need it.. its def in the "neat toy" territory, but I know after faffing around with it for a bit, it will be pretty useless to me
@codemonkeymike If I was looking for a small desktop setup for myself or a relative, this would be perfect though.
Straightforward hardware (especially if you have both the 500 and the monitor) and a friendly operating system. I appreciate that cost is an issue, but could also be amazing in an education setting.
It seems to be very much the successor to the BBC Micro and the positive impact that had.
@codemonkeymike
A wild guess:
You probably have enough devices laying around, that were as exciting at launch, but now they are collecting dust, because you don't know what to do with them.
At least that's what works for me. Your mileage may vary.
@codemonkeymike get a used micro PC from Dell much better value!
@jelloeater oh I don't need that either lol
@codemonkeymike I feel ya on that... I almost renewed the warranty on this bad boy $120 for 2 years in this economy kek
@jelloeater haha. Nice! Yeah I have a Thelio, framework and a Beelink. This would just be a toy. And playing with arm
@codemonkeymike Framework is straight I wish I had one, just got a used Inspiron running Ubuntu, gets me by okie
Have you played with 8266's or esp32's ?
@jelloeater love the framework. It's so good.
I have no played with them. To be honest not even sure what they are. I'll have to look it up.
@codemonkeymike oh you're in for a world of fun!
@jelloeater oh yeah. That's a whole area I'm so curious about but have no experience. And have no idea what id even do with it.
I'm always waiting for a use case to come forward to make me wanna use it
