The colors in this look wild.
For anyone coming across this thread and wanting context—
A little while ago Starship test launch #7 took off from Boca Chica, Texas. The first stage booster successfully came back to the launch site and was caught. However, SpaceX lost communication with the 2nd stage soon after the 2 stages separated.
At this point it's pretty much guaranteed that this footage is of the 2nd stage breaking up as it re-enters the atmosphere over the Carribean.
This falling debris is most likely not going to fall on anyone since the flight path is specifically chosen to avoid going over any land, but we don't know for sure.
It appears someone captured the moment the 2nd stage broke up. This is how rockets breaking up tend to look due to the tanks getting ruptured and the gas rapidly expanding.

A Spirit airlines flight to Puerto Rico forced to enter a holding pattern to avoid falling debris.
Okay, this is the last video I swear—onboard footage from one of the airplanes in the area. I would guess these pilots were to the south of the debris. (So, it could not have been the Spirit flight I tooted above, because that one stayed north)

Came across more information regarding the flight path and where debris was falling. Looks like the ship came in at an angle that sent more South than expected. Luckily there don't seem to be islands in the debris area, but there's still going to be questions about SpaceX's ability to safely launch out of Texas.

@chris_hayes
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.
@ColesStreetPothole Aww I can't believe I didn't recognize that quote, had to look it up. Blade Runner is one of my all-time favorite films! Will have to re-watch tonight as punishment.
@chris_hayes
At one point, BR was my all-time-fave movie, above 2001 . . . for a moment.
I only used that quote because there aren't any good ones from Moonraker.
@ColesStreetPothole @chris_hayes Still, really, my all time favorite. The mood, the general vibe, and the wonderful Vangelis score.
@ColesStreetPothole @chris_hayes
a few years ago (ok, maybe more than a few) I was playing Starfinder (the book-and-paper role playing game), first rpg I'd played in many years, and some incident caused me to unthinkingly rattle off that quote. And a friend looked at me and said "I didn't think you had seen that movie.", because I'm famous for not seeing movies. And then I had to explain I actually didn't know what it was from, I knew the quote only from internet memes ...
@ColesStreetPothole @chris_hayes Do NOT quote casually from the canon.
@ColesStreetPothole @chris_hayes
All these moments lost in time, like tears in rain.
@chris_hayes @JonChevreau Would this be the result of the Flight Termination System? If some “anomaly” happens during a launch, the vehicle has explosives that are supposed to destroy the vehicle rather then let the entire thing come down in one huge piece (potentially with engines still running and full of fuel). I don’t know if the FTS was triggered in this case or not.
@michaelgemar @JonChevreau I don't know either. SpaceX knows a fire was beginning to develop inside the ship which likely started causing problems. But, I don't know for sure if the FTS was triggered, the SpaceX press release didn't specify [1]. But, the FTS blowing up the ship would look a lot like it does here.

@chris_hayes can never be sure with Lord God King Elon at the wheel
@chris_hayes
Errrrr how are they going to get those astronauts down from the space station? I thought spaceX was going to get them. Don't rate their chances atm tbh...
@chris_hayes Under atmospheric compression (not friction, as people are often taught), materials combust if they get hot enough, or glow (like hot iron), each bit in hues characteristic of its chemical composition. You can get a lot of crazy colours that way.
@wesdym yeah! I saw someone mention the orange and green correspond to the stainless steel of the hull and the material used for the engines.
@chris_hayes My God, Bones, what have I done?
@chris_hayes Too bad Elon Musk wasn't on that rocket
@chris_hayes the ship makes stars, that's it's function.
@chris_hayes This #SpaceX failure is a preview of the end-stage of #AmericanCarnage2.0, but will it be in 2 years or 4?
@chris_hayes Horrifying & beautiful...
@chris_hayes The quality of Musk's products, encapsulated.
@Gustodon @chris_hayes
I bet the peeps up in the space station are excited to be riding one of muks teslas home
@chris_hayes Gosh that’s pretty!
@chris_hayes
“rapid unscheduled disassembly”
@chris_hayes They should have sent a poet.
@chris_hayes
.
how apt
just what the dinosaurs saw before the end too
@chris_hayes This is what happens when you flex your boosted account in hardcore mode.
@chris_hayes Makes me want to read the Matthieu Bablet comic book Shangri-La again. Just to have those scenes in mind for certain key moments.
@enthraxxx I've never read it, I'll have to look it up. I was reminded of the film, "Your Name", where a meteor breaks up in the atmosphere which causes part of it to wipe out a town.
@chris_hayes I'll have to look it up. For some strange reason, I never got to see it, while only hearing good things about it. Thanks!
@enthraxxx Just read the synopsis, the story sounds interesting!
@chris_hayes Everything else aside, it's a pretty show.
@mike Agreed! This isn't good for Earth, not good for the Carribean, not good for spaceflight, not good for SpaceX. But, boy is this footage beautiful.
@chris_hayes 1,000,000,000 citations for littering (and creating a nuisance)
@chris_hayes Wow, that's quite a shot
