Pawpaw fruit! Not ripe yet, but hanging in there. I only saw a few others on this tree. We seldom see fruit at all. Usually, despite lots of blossoms in the spring, only a few fruit are set and most fall off while they're small.
@catselbow "Vegetable shmoo"!!
@handmade_ghost
Checking my knowledge of shmoo-based cuisines, Wikipedia tells me:
"Shmoos are delicious to eat, and are eager to be eaten. If a human looks at one hungrily, it will happily immolate itself—either by jumping into a frying pan, after which they taste like chicken, or under a grill, after which they taste like steak. When roasted they taste like pork, and when baked they taste like catfish. Raw, they taste like oysters on the half-shell."
@catselbow Now there's a rabbit hole to send me down! I was sad to note that, apparently, "[s]ome of the tastier varieties of shmoo are more difficult to catch." I guess I'll have to make simpler dinner plans for tonight.
@handmade_ghost
Waiting for the other shmoo to drop?
@catselbow I mean, if the shmoo fits . . .
@catselbow the one chance I had to eat ripe pawpaw fruit from the wild it was delicious, but SO MESSY! Fell apart into sweet goop in my fingers and smeared everywhere!
@dendroica
It's no wonder on of its common names is "custard apple"!
@catselbow I do not know, if it is related. But it happened to me exactly the same this Summer with all of my cherry and prune trees. And they all died soon after this meager harvest. In my case, I think, this relates to 2022 heat dome.
@erol_foret
That's terrible! I'm so sorry you lost them.
@catselbow Thank you. I really loved them indeed. They were the last ones of a local variety.
And all Black locust seedlings died too, while adult trees look unwell. To me this is rather good news, as this imported species is invasive in our floodplains. It's native from America. Such heat-induced dieback would be a disaster there.
@erol_foret
I didn't know that ANYTHING could kill black locusts.
@catselbow I have a friend who uses swatches of cheap pantyhose to support ripening fruit so the weight doesn’t pull them down before they are ready.
@hal_pomeranz
Ha! "Pantry hose"*
