Hello world!
I'm a PhD student (physical oceanography) and accidental Python instructor in Norwich, UK.

Trying to make my corner of science more open and build FOSS community in the ivory tower.

When not online I'm often on the water.

@callum Welcome to fosstodon. Here we are a small community. Hope you have fun here. 😁

@callum welcome! I hope you find Fosstodon and interesting place to hang out. 😊

Thanks @kev reading through some of your blog posts now, great writing! 😀

@callum Welcome! Also a PhD student, albeit in the humanities. And damn, do I feel you. First time I've seen R and I wound up as an accidental instructor to the part of the group which is going like "what button do I press".

@werekat Yeah, I took an intro to Python in my first year. The instructor finished his PhD a few months later and asked me to take on his teaching. Been making it up as I go since >< must be even tougher in the humanities I imagine.

@callum I mean, it's sort of the same - most of us who are at the PhD level know how to read enough to read manuals. :P But the thing is, most of the group in the MA course had last seen math in high school, i.e. 4-5 years back. I've been hanging around math people for most of life, so it didn't scare me - annnd so I wound up being the go-to person for basic questions.

@werekat I'm lucky that people just ask me to translate their maths into Python at least! Have found being go-to comp nerd a lot more enjoyable than writing papers. Leaning toward a research software engineer career path rather than postdocs at this point. Would be rad to code wrangle in the ivory tower for a living.

@callum a fellow kayaker I see! Great to have you on the fediverse!

@freddy It's an old sit on top > 30 kg with leaky bungs, but still an engine of joy 😊 been a lifeline this year

@callum when I was first starting out, I once forgot to put in my bung. With every stroke I took, more water was gushing in the Kayak. I nearly sunk the thing!

@callum Welcome to Fosstodon! I hope you'll find this community interesting and it's a great thing that you're trying to expand FOSS to other areas of science and knowledge! Cheers!

Thanks@h4rdstyl3z good to be here :) trains >> planes any day

@callum Welcome to Fosstodon. Things are slow at first but as you find people with similar interests and follow them, others will follow you. Create your bio, add an avatar pic and some emojis to your name so others can learn more about you. If you haven't, sending out an introduction listing your interests will help.

The custom emoji list is here:

Good luck and have fun.

Thanks @Tay0, been made to feel very welcome here. I'll sprinkle some emojis in my bio
