You're not a bad person for liking things that are proprietary. You are not immoral for enjoying things that were made behind closed doors. You are not less of a person for having the desire for XYZ product from a premium company, regardless of whether they contribute to open source or not.
Follow up: You don't need to feel guilty for choosing proprietary software.
If you prefer to use Spotify over local music because it better fits your listening style, go for it!
Should you look for more secure and privacy-respecting alternatives? Sure. But you don't need to develop a cognitive dissonance when it comes to what your preferences for software are.
Do what you're comfortable with, keep an open mind, and try things whenever you feel like something new.
@brandon I like this take. Its neutral, blends perfectly while not making each flavour more and overall a better take than most. Kinda my cup of tea ngl
@XxAlexXx Thank you for that. I feel like there's a little too much shaming going on sometimes in the world of FOSS and not enough love for those who are at the very least putting in some effort to choose FOSS when possible
@brandon What people shouldn't do: Make people force to use FOSS apps.
What people should do: Inform the public why foss is good and secure, why it is more private and why big data stealing your privacy.
@brandon Spotify is popular because it's cheap, and it's cheap because they don't pay the artists.
This is fine as long as you are happy listening to music made by rich people's children.
@kai I certainly don't choose Spotify because it's cheap.
But your reply here is kind of the point of why I posted it. You're like...trying to guilt me for something that doesn't affect you? At least that's what it feels like
@kai If that's all you're finding on Spotify then...don't listen to Spotify? Go onto Bandcamp or something :P
@kai I'll have to try that out again 🤔 Last time I tried it there was a lot of my existing library missing
How's the discovery on there?
@brandon I do use Bandcamp, just as you suggested 😋
I have found digital downloads on Tidal (download, not streaming) for almost every artist not on Bandcamp.
Discovery on Tidal streaming is probably not as good as Spotify.
My real point is that no one cares that Spotify is closed source; they care that Spotify doesn't pay.
Use it all you want; just realize that you are paying for the service, not the art.
If you want the art to exist, you better find a way to pay for it.
@kai Spotify was just one example. Maybe I would have been better to talk about something more like Microsoft Office or Adobe Creative Cloud
@brandon Creative Cloud is expensive enough that I think only professionals can even afford to use it 😋 and I hear Office is pretty good these days.
@robby Ah, I was aware of it but that wasn't going through my head at the time.
Might be something to set up 👌
@brandon I posted something just like this about two weeks ago and saw a similar amount of interaction. Yours was worded more nicely though 😅
if we're being very super honest... marketing is just, powerful.
i blame zero humans for their desires. imo, we've got urges and impulses as a species.
there are just some... entities- that have the powers and capabilities to systematically identify and target these urges and impulses at individual levels in deeply personal environements.
no person is to blame for what they want or why they want something in the year 2021... only the people that have exploited them to desire anything other than what their heart yearned for essentially.
But I encounterd some people that they feel they are honorable and rich enough to choose proprietary hardware and software specifically.
Maybe they are not bad people, but I will not think they are good people.
@wzqtparor I agree with you. Those who choose to hold their choices over your head as a sign of (perceived) superiority, fuck'em.
@brandon perhaps not, indeed as the Human League's Phil Oakley once sang, "I'm only human, I'm flesh and blood, that's all." But if we all just accepted the targeted, brightly shining temptations of proprietary big tech and it's associates, where would be? Heading towards complete submission, towards an Orwellian nightmare where #bigbrother knows #everything. Hurtling head first towards the coming #singularity with our shackles already on.
@zoot that's why I think it's important to keep an open mind for things that are more privacy oriented. That's equally as important as feeling comfortable in making a decision
