Female candidate for our helpdesk has been the first in like 6 that I've actually been able to say a strong yes on. All others were men, and just...meh
to be clear, I'm happy that we might finally get the first female full time employee on our IT team
@brandon Given the strength of gatekeeping in our society, being in a large-but-discriminated-against category is actually a signal of very high quality; you must be good, otherwise you would've been forced out long ago.
In an ideal market of perfectly rational employers, this signal would be exploited until it ceased to exist. Unfortunately, we don't live in such a world.
@wizzwizz4 umm...ok? I don't quite follow what you're trying to get at
@brandon Oh, I didn't have a point. It just felt like a relevant time to write a thing I've been thinking about for a while.
@brandon @wizzwizz4 IT is traditionally dominated by males. I've noticed that the women in my IT company on average have a higher drive to excel than the men, and it may be, at least partially, because they have to work that much harder to be taken seriously. It could also be a bias because of the stigma that IT = male. Women may resist pursuing a career in IT unless they have a real passion for it, which would mean that the women in IT become disproportionately awesome at their jobs.
@brandon Yeah, someone has to make coffee har har har.
Just kidding! If she is good worker, who cares about gender?
@efftoyz Less about gender specifically and more about experience. As a woman she's certainly had a different experience working in IT and has different opinions to bring to the table. Can help diversify perspectives and workflow ideology :)
@brandon oh wow. Like in history the first full time female?
Every company I worked at we had females every where, from labor to management.
@jordan31 Full time *in IT*
@brandon ah ok. I can understand that to an extent.
@jordan31 We have an intern working with us this summer who's a woman but she's also had no experience prior in IT so a little different.
I'm mostly happy that we're gonna get another Montreal person though! Like, we're two people in the Montreal office for the entire IT team :(
I want more friendddssss
