"The nominee is quoted as saying that if the choice of a sexual partner were protected by the Constitution, 'prostitution, adultery, necrophilia, bestiality, possession of child pornography, and even incest and pedophilia' also would be. He is probably mistaken, legally--but that is unfortunate. All of these acts should be legal as long as no one is coerced. They are illegal only because of prejudice and narrowmindedness." - Richard Stallman

"Rick Falkvinge joins me in demanding an end to the censorship of "child pornography", and points out that if in the US you observe the rape of a child, making a video or photo to use as evidence would subject you to a greater penalty than the rapist. "

Supply and demand folks.

RMS' "Pleasure" card. He describes it as a replacement for a business card. Fucking creepy.

"The reference reports the claim that Minsky had sex with one of Epstein’s harem…Let’s presume that was true (I see no reason to disbelieve it).

"We can imagine many scenarios, but the most plausible scenario is that she presented herself to him as entirely willing." - RMS in reference to the Epstein child sex trafficking case

Some of you idolize this guy and yeah, he's done some pretty fucking remarkable work. But some of the work is thanks to the attention he's garnered and some of that attention has been garnered thanks to comments and opinions like this.

I'm not okay with that and I think that we should not be hoisting this guy to the top as a "symbol" for Free Software. The idea is bigger than him.

RMS Disgustingness

@brandon I agree with you but who could defend FOSS better than him? And yeah we should make him the cover of the FOSS, maybe focus more on GNU itself.

RMS Disgustingness

@Ucak I think there's a typo here. Did you mean "shouldn't"?

I think there are other folks who could do not only a better job defending free software, but also be more effective at spreading it.

No, I couldn't do a better job, but that doesn't mean I can't call for a better representative in situations where I believe the current representative is an ill representation of the community

RMS Disgustingness

@brandon @Ucak

one could look at LibrePlanet speakers & FSF award recipients as just one obvious & ready source of people doing great work in software freedom with much less of the baggage, at least a few of whom are on fedi

RMS Disgustingness

@brandon @Ucak

(disclosure: I was on a panel a couple of years ago. But I'm not who I meant :-)

RMS Disgustingness

@brandon Yes, i meant "shouldnt"

RMS Disgustingness

@brandon a man can be right on some things and wrong on others. He is right about many things, wrong about some things. He is fiercely militant about things he cares about, and those are more often than not good causes. He's certainly not perfect, and is pretty eccentric, but has done a lot of good regarding free computing so just for that I will continue to read his thoughts on things, even if I might disagree with some of his views. As I tend to do with most people...

RMS Disgustingness

@Matter I think for the benefit of diversity in the free software movement, it would be wise to /not/ call attention to RMS, except in cases where only his work is being praised and when pointing out injustices.

He is not a pleasant man to be around and it shows on multiple fronts from his political commentary regarding sexuality and sexualized behaviour, to the plethora of really awkward and abrasive interviews.

RMS Disgustingness

@brandon Hmm, this really has me on the fence. Sometimes I would disagree and leave the person to his views (RMS that is); and I'm sort of leaning to that. But, this is kind of fucked up. I could defend him, and see his point, but this time I agree with you. He prob doesn't need the spotlight for a while. I know FOSS/GNU is his idea, but some of his views suck. There are numerous people that could be spotlighted to show new ideas and a new voice. :/

RMS Disgustingness

@brandon I was an RMS fanboy until someone here said something like, "Too bad about the pedo justification."

I said, "Huh?" and did some research. Yeah, RMS is no longer on my list of heros.

Don't think I'd attend his talk even if it were in the same building and I had the day free.
