Benjamin Hollon 🇺🇸🇲🇾🇮🇳🇦🇫

@sotolf @RL_Dane @tulpa @ctietze

I feel like I have to get into this one-upping of hardware now.

Not quite the same, but my raspberry pi was the first computer I owned that was undisputably mine and not a shared family device. ;)

@benjaminhollon @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze

NOICE. Which model? What nickname/hostname did you give it? :D

@RL_Dane @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze It's a 3B+, I believe.

I've nuked and paved it so many times and usually changed the hostname each time to something relevant to my current project...

My favorite was astrochicken, which was surprisingly relevant.

@benjaminhollon @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze

That's an awesome name, although I suddenly want to know what that was relevant to ^__^

When I was a kid, I used a person's name. As a youngish adult, they were usually various pop culture/sci-fi references.

Now, every laptop is named after a ship (or class), and every desktop/non-portable after a planet.

My Raspberry Pi 4 4GB is Bespin. :)

@RL_Dane @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze

It was when I used the camera module to make a camera that streamed footage through my telescope to my phone through an ad-hoc wifi network.

As for the "chicken"; I'll have to show you this picture of my custom-built mounting solution (the mounting hardware fits perfectly over the telescope lens)

@RL_Dane @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze For my laptops I use names of scientists:

- galileo (my Surface Laptop 1st-gen that was terrible)
- dirac (an old Mac)
- feynman (a Dell Inspiron)
- archimedes (my Framework)

@RL_Dane @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze Oh, and my old phone for some reason I can’t recall was referred to as “Avogadro” by my friends even though the host name I set was Starman.

@benjaminhollon @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze

Ha! Love it.
Lego and computing belong together.

The first google server had a case!

@RL_Dane @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze Count me informed.

I honestly lucked out that standard telescope lenses are exactly four lego studs in diameter. ;)

Unless they made them on purpose that way... 🤯

@benjaminhollon @RL_Dane @sotolf @tulpa @ctietze

what the heck all my friends are hanging out with out me.

lol I am really boring when it comes to naming computers:

- Debian (yes literally. lol my first linux install and main machine)
- debian-lap
- mack
- hackbook pro
- smack

I don't like macs... and we have a lot.

@twizzay @benjaminhollon @ctietze @sotolf @tulpa

I had a friend in college who always ran Linux on a Thinkpad (circa 2000)

I saw his screen once and his prompt was:

rng@slab ~ $_

Very original. rng of course we're his initials. Slab was a great name for a Thinkpad, *especially* 22 years ago.

Crudbiscuits, I'm old.

@RL_Dane my current laptop's name is "airtuxi" because it outwardly looks a lot like a Macbook Air. 😁

Debian FTW (although I've recently switched to Devuan)
