Social media's stranglehold comes from lock-in, not network effects (network effects can be reversed with #interoperability. The important thing about a walled garden is the height of the walls, not the number of people locked inside them: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/social-media-competitive-compatibility
Excellent news! RMS now officially has the full support of the FSF. Until now, the FSF has been silent on the matter of his return.
The Free Software Foundation has now made an official statement regarding Richard Stallman's return to the board of directors: https://fsf.org/news/statement-of-fsf-board-on-election-of-richard-stallman
RMS made a separate statement: https://fsf.org/news/rms-addresses-the-free-software-community
I hope we can all move on past the divisive, hateful politics of recent weeks.
I encourage everyone to chip in on this crowd fund campaign. Louis Rossman, well-known Right to Repair lobbyist wants to get laws passed in his country USA for Right to Repair.
This will greatly benefit projects like coreboot and riscv-related projects.
Right to repair means: access to schematics, boardviews and other such info necessary for repair. Presently, hardware/logic info is highly restrictive. This law would be a huge legal precedent for future rights.
Of the companies that market stalkerware—sometimes under the guise of child safety or employee-monitoring software—@evacide told the TED audience, “Do these companies know that their tools are being used as tools of abuse? Absolutely.” https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/05/watch-eff-cybersecurity-director-eva-galperins-ted-talk-about-stalkerware
@gamingonlinux you can only have DirectX on Linux...if you run it on Windows!?
I will continue to distrust M$ for as long as they continue these one-sided "contribtutions", or whatever they like to call it these days.
There's some crazy internal US politics right now that threatens #OpenTechFund, who funded #LetsEncrypt, #CertBot, @torproject , #NoScript, TLS ESNI/ECH, #DNSPrivacyProj, #ReproducibleBuilds, #Wireguard, #DeltaChat, #OpenKeychain, #pypi, @guardianproject , @signalapp , and more. Looks like a couple proprietary software companies are trying to take over this #FreeSoftware money. Please sign on to the campaign to try to stop it: https://saveinternetfreedom.tech
