Death mentioned, surgery mentioned, teeth, existentialism

In about 13 hours they're gonna rip my extra teeth out. This will involve general anesthesia, which is one of the most extensive interruptions in contiguity of consciousness that can happen to you without (at least) a high risk of death.

If I cease to exist as a result no one will be able to tell you, because the entity that succeeds me in the same body with the same memories will not be able to tell that it happened.

Update: Post-general anesthesia Alex reporting. As expected, unable to report on status of pre-general anesthesia Alex. Still in process of recovering full normal brain function but now have been prescribed a narcotic painkiller I'm supposed to use sparingly. If severe pain does happen I may end up once again in an altered state of consciousness. Will report on mental weirdness.

@alexbuzzbee how do you know this hasn’t happened in the past?

Death mentioned, surgery mentioned, teeth, existentialism

@onan I had general anesthesia for a leg surgery so I may be the second of me. Unless sleep is enough in which case *throws hands up*

@alexbuzzbee @onan If sleep is death, your definition of death is bad.

Personally, if I got completely obliterated from existence then spontaneously re-appeared, I wouldn't have much of an issue with it. The only trouble is that that *can't happen*, according to the laws of information theory; this issue is not present in your case.

(Timeless physics seems to work well. If time is an illusion, so is continuity of consciousness.)

@alexbuzzbee @onan I think probably the self is information rather than continuity of consciousness. In which case @wizzwizz4 is right.

@Hyolobrika @alexbuzzbee @onan "Self is information" behaves similarly to continuity of consciousness in several ways, actually. (The differences are more obvious than the similarities.)

@alexbuzzbee Clearly you should put "(2)" at the end of your display name.

@mdhughes 3, this is my second time going under general anesthesia. But at the same time I can't say what threshold if any there is so I can't really be sure what the number is.
