Is "sir" actually male-gendered or is that patriarchy talking?

This is just me talking out of my ass but I presume it's a bit of both. Since I've seen it more formally used to refer to knights which, as far as I know, was a position reserved for males. Similar to what "Don" used to mean in Spanish. 🤔

@alexbuzzbee I guess having a monarchy sets a precedent for these things. We use "Sir" and "Ma'am" and, yes, gender is involved. 😁
