@airlied better late than never I guess, shame about the collateral damage from the delay :(

@airlied dreading that thread, but I think I need to jump in to write Miguel a thank you note

@airlied I'm still puzzled how many people replied on this thread multiple times and with lengthy mails. Like where are they taking the time? That is more interesting to me than the whole Rust discussion itself.

@brauner
I think a fair few people see it as an important question that needs settling to ensure the longer term viability of the project. At some point it probably needs to stated explicitly rather then trying to guess from subtext?
@airlied

@srtcd424 @brauner I really don't get the point of that, the kernel has never had a long term viability plan, it has evolved, but you mention rust and suddenly everyone cares about alpha and mips32, multiple compilers, 20 year stability, stuff the C side grew over 30 years

@airlied
Yeah, that's a little hard to take seriously
@brauner

@brauner @airlied call me cynical but to me it's just really obvious bike shedding?

With no offence meant to anybody, it's a good chance to get all 'big brained' and make sweeping grand statements about the nature of linux, rust, the universe and everything and pop a monocle on.

'twas ever the case.

But yeah, let's get back to coding please... :>)

@brauner I had a lot of Grandpa Simpson/old man shakes fist at cloud feels, in my day we used memory unsafe languages and C++ was the future and we liked it! Definitely a lot of off point wandering, maybe next time Linus will save us the journey 🙂
