@teh_dude ffmpeg is The Tool people use when converting video and often converting images. It's also the tool people generally use for decoding many types of video, since it has its own really fast decoders. Chromium, VLC, and mpv.io play videos using FFMpeg's libraries.

AVIF and JPEG-XL are the next-gen image formats that usually perform much better than JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Web browsers that are not made by Apple generally support AVIF and will soon support JPEG-XL.

Now that FFMpeg has support, we can do things like encode animated JPEG-XLs from source video while using FFMpeg's cool filters. One thing I like to do is encode screen recordings to lossless animated image formats like WebP, dropping duplicate frames with a filter called "mpdecimate". The resulting animated image is smaller than the equivalent video and faster to encode. Now, I can do this with JPEG-XL.

I just tested the new @gajim development version with the mainwindow branch merged to main. I think it is an amazing improvement in look and feel!

Another improvement I really missed in desktop XMPP Clients is "XEP-0393 Message Styling", which is implemented in this version as well. Even syntax highlight for different programming languages is included.

Really nice work the gajim team has done there. I really look forward to the stable release!

After Mozilla recently began accepting donations via BitPay, many people started being vocal about cancelling Mozilla and Firefox and switching to other browsers.

I know crypto sucks, but don't y'all realize that the other browser engines are developed by megacorps that are LEAGUES ahead in terms of ecologic impact, and that are almost entirely built on top of evil business models?

Mozilla's only sin was accepting donations via BitPay. Please let's stop being so toxic about everything, and boycott BitPay and Bitcoin rather than Mozilla, shall we?

This should be a teachable moment to everyone in software dev as well: imagine it wasn't Facebook, but Microsoft (including Github) instead where everything goes down?

Was meint ihr?

Tame your evil rm (actually replace it with tamed one)

Put files (and directories) in trash using the `trash-put` command in a way that is, otherwise as `trash-put` itself, compatible to GNUs `rm` and `rmdir`

I like to get into tiling WMs. But there are so many, does some fedi folks have recommendations for me? If possible with reason why it's better then others.

Boosts are welcome. :)

Philipp Hörist (lovetox), maintainer of @gajim, gave a preview of the new Gajim 1.4 User Interface. Gajim is an XMPP client written in Python. It currently receives a big UI overhaul, of which the first results were presented at the Office Hours.🎙️

There are many USB 3.0 (not thunderbold) Docks which allow to add more screens to a laptop. But all I found just talk about Windows and Mac support. Does this work on Linux too?

I just discovered Markor. It's a note app with markdown support. Also it saves it's notes as plain text files on the file system. In combination with Syncthing I now have nice looking simple notes, which are shared between my computer and my Handy! I just wanted to share this with you, maybe someone other found this interesting.
