#Introduction Hello #fosstodon!
Yet Another Twitter Refugee landing on the shores of the #fediverse #mastodon world.
I am fleeing the unleashing of the trolls in the impending Musk-alypse.
With >41K blocks and <3K follows on Twitter the noise to signal ratio is trending the wrong way. And it will get worse.

That’s right, it’s #SpaceTalkTuesday time! This week it’s all about ~exoplanetary habitability~
What does habitability really mean? Do we know of any habitable #exoplanets? How will we be able to study them now and in the future?
Follow along for answers to these #science questions and more!
(fair warning, this will be a long thread. the threaded posts are unlisted as a best practice, but you can still boost them)
I started writing the first #SpaceTalkTuesday thread about planetary habitability, but quickly realized you all need some background on how we *find* planets first!
So sorry to everyone who voted for habitability, but we’re doing HOW TO FIND AN EXOPLANET 🔭 today!
I promise this will make the habitability thread next week make even more sense (1/)
My home feed is a cross between #kubernetes & #retrocomputing right now as I build up my follows.
I feel like I am living in a temporal discontinuity.
When we created ODF 20+ years ago, Microsoft first laughed at the committee at OASIS, then made OOXML to render it moot, then rigged ISO to make OOXML a standard, then implemented ODF and now participates in the ODF committee and helps fund its work through COSM.
#Bluesky is Twitter's OOXML to #ActivityPub and it's at the "rigging ISO" stage.
So you just arrived here from twitter and it's quiet. Real quiet. That's because there's no algorithm here designed to drive engagement(which equals profit).
Here, you are the algorithm. It's up to you to find and follow people that are interesting to you. You can also see who they follow and who else follows them, as you build it up, it gets more interesting.
Also, if you find people you don't like or entire instances you don't like, you can mute or block them. You are in control.
A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!
So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.
This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.
