Good piece on the misuse of the word "viral" in describing the GPL: https://heathermeeker.com/2019/03/05/open-source-and-the-eradication-of-viruses/
TL;DR: The GPL does not "infect" attached pieces of code, so it doesn't make sense to say it has a "viral clause".
If you screw up and include GPL'd code in your proprietary binary, sure, you're in violation of the license. But you don't sign away rights to your own code just by linking a library!
Happy Friday my lovely •ARTists!
Our instance had recently been updated to version 2.9, which gives you the option of using a new single-column interface. This new interface will be default for new users, but you can decide which version you want to use in your settings page.
More info on the update here: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/06/mastodon-2.9/
Keep being awesome!
@lunduke my condolences. 65 is too young!
My dad died yesterday.
He was 65 and had become a hero to me. A few months back, when we almost lost my wife and newborn son, my dad came and stayed with us. He took care of my kids -- kept them fed and feeling loved -- while I was taking care of things in the hospitals.
He dropped everything for a month... to make sure he was there for me and our kids.
When I needed help more than any other time in my life... he was there. And he was amazing.
I love you, dad.
I'm not sure about "complete", but fairly comprehensive anyway.

Woo! As you may have seen from that previous boost, Mastodon 2.9 is now out, featuring a new single column interface:
This is, IMHO, a huge step forward for getting non-technical people onto Mastodon 👍
Instead of the Tweetdeck-style interface, there's now a default single-column timeline which is much less scary.
(The multicolumn original is still an option in Settings, and those who currently use multicolumn will continue to see it by default.)
@Chrishallbeck I just got home from a night shift (it's about 5 am here), so this feels appropriate tight now 😎
@HerraBRE could you tell us what kind of somewhat useful program you started building in Go? 🤔
earth isn't round
@saxnot A closed orientable 2-manifold (surface) of genus 0 is a better approximation than even an ellipsoid. But still may be not good enough: if we consider natural and artificial bridges and tunnels, the genus is no longer 0. And so on and so forth.
Sure it's all about the models and approximations. Oh, and by the way, the Earth may rightfully be called flat, just locally. And for those who're going to never leave their village that may be a good enough approximation :)
