broke: all of these genuine forms of connection are marketing, actually

bespoke: marketing is the commodification of genuine connection

#BOFH excuse #80:

That's a great computer you have there; have you considered how it would work as a BSD machine?

Dell PowerEdge servers are so cool! I got a refurb to play with. IPMI is magical and it's pretty good hardware for the price.

So much of social media seems like a vehicle for brand building and personal marketing. I'm pitching an idealized version of myself. Even trying to mentally counteract, I still get a high from seeing boosts and favorites. This isn't social media, it's hit rates on a campaign!

Hot take: social media is the democratization of propaganda tools.

Just hacked on my website build process to pull a readme from another repo and generate a page from it. I'm pretty stoked with how it came out:

The most frustrating thing about building software is the feeling that I'm building sand castles that will eventually get wiped away. It takes a staggering amount of effort *just to keep software running exactly the same as before*. Not to add improvements! Not to fix bugs! Just to keep it working exactly the same as it once did. It's maddening if you want to have a sense of personal pride at something you built years ago. Your "legacy" is nonexistent, unless you stay on the treadmill.

Maybe the real answer is "don't publish without a GPL reference implementation". I don't know 🤷

Question: I'm publishing a plain readme with a CRDT algorithm. I think it's novel and it has some pretty cool behaviors. What kind of license should I use?

If it were source code, I'd use GPL-3. Is there a similar viral license for publishing ideas?

Interesting. There's a group of people trying to get support for CRDTs and OT baked into the HTTP spec.

Almost all of these are dev deps. I could probably set up some kind of auto-merge thing.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

Nix is just the greatest thing ever. Trying to get bcrypto built through node-gyp and it's missing a few deps (python, make, binutils).

Throw some `nix run` at the problem and it's working in about a minute. Put the resulting packages in a shell.nix file and I'll never have the problem again.

That would've taken me *much* longer without Nix. And this way I don't have one-off build tools clogging up my system.

God I love Nix.

What’s Mastodons help page called?

The Tootorial

I just made an auto-updating nix channel to serve my custom vim plugins. So overkill.
