I somehow missed this when it was announced last month:

is a, um, new shell. It aims to more strictly follow the by spiting tasks up into smaller chunks/making more use of pipelines.

To do that, it treats data as tables of 2+ dimensions rather than as flat text, drawing a bit from but with a simpler design.

Not sure the benefits are large enough to convince me to switch, but it's an interesting idea.

is a file manager with Vi inspired keybindings.

Ranger provides quite versatile file management tools in a simple and configurable package. Ranger features macros, key rebinding, file modification commands, and a versatile file launcher. Ranger can also grab the names of many files and place them into a text editor, where the user can then rename them however they wish

Open source projects which lack licenses are quite annoying.

Please license your project, otherwise it's not FOSS and you shouldn't be calling it as such. Even small things like shell scripts and Vim themes require licenses to be FOSS.

License your code, please.

I really like using for my school work. Completely changed the way I do essays.

F-Droid will soon have stricter requirements for apps showing up in the "Latest" tab in the F-Droid app:

If you are an app developer consider adding good descriptions, screenshots and a "Whats's New" section for your app.

If you notice that your favourite app doesn't fulfill all these requirements consider notifying the app's developers or just help them with a merge request adding the missing info to the source repo.

Since the fediverse's temature seems a little hot right now, it might be a good time to remind y'all about mastodon-de-mob.codesections.c , which is the tool I wrote to help block harassing users.

I hope no one needs it, but don't forget that it's there. Stay safe out there and be kind to one another!

This is an excellent testimonial to FOSS systems. Regardless of your thoughts on the quality of the product, people bought these things for $900 American. Now, the company is gone and the servers are being shut down. This formerly $900 device is useless for anything other than parts.

Watching Mastodon grow and seeing other ActivityPub compatible platforms appearing is great! I love that all these disparate applications work together to form one new user base. By making your new software ActivityPub aware, you're getting a built in community. I hope it continues to grow and grow.

When I inform people of how dodgy FB and WhatsApp are, they generally reply with "But I have nothing to hide".
My response is always: " Do you shit with the door open?
Do you live in a glass house?
Do you have sex on the tram/bus when it's filled with strangers? "

Oh, I see. You DO enjoy your privacy?!

Fuck sakes.

We just made our first donation to an open source project. Thanks to our Patrons, we were able to send $150 to Mastodon!

(Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit) is a tool for scrubbing files of revealing metadata.

MAT supports many filetypes including TIFF, PNG, JPEG, Open Document, Office OpenXML, TAR, ZIP, MPEG, OGG, FLAC, and Torrent.

When a file is opened MAT will tell you whether the file is dirty (contains identifiable metadata) or clean. MAT can then clean dirty files, allowing you to anonymously distribute them.

PSA: MyFitnessPal has been compromised leading to 143M accounts to have their weakly hashed passwords, usernames, email addresses and IP addresses leaked.

Considering that UnderArmour owns MFP, and that password resets go through your UA account, I would garner to say that you should change your password if you're signed up to any of the UA-owned services.
